This report (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/07/peru-helicopter-missing_n_1577953.html), if accurate, would seem to indicate that the authorities have an ELT trace.

One wonders if the crew and passengers were on oxygen. The air is a bit thin at 16,000 feet.

Off thread a wee bit but not so many weeks ago over the boarder from here in West Papua (irian Jiya) a Kershaw Aviation squirrel smacked into clouds with a solid centre - one of the last position squawks transmitted from 18000' and a descent airspeed of 300 knots.
What an absolutely terrifying experience.

I don't think a Squirrel could do 300 knots, even without a rotor head?
