Beaufort, they are fairly big dogs. I understand they are also slobber-free! Here's the Club (http://www.estrelamountaindogassociation.co.uk/) website and also the KC (http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/services/public/breed/standard.aspx?id=5123) Breed Standard. Like the Welsh Sheepdog the Estrela is an ancient breed. Lovely dogs with a nice disposition. The puppy in that photo is a six months old male.

beaufort1 9th Jun 2012, 12:24 Slobber free? They are not proper dogs then as you aren't getting the full benefit. There is nothing like removing what look like little black curly hairy caterpillars from ceilings/walls and other surfaces where one's 'faithful hound' has shaken her head and you've missed the drool to wipe it off while it's still wet. ;)

Nani, I agree with you wholeheartedly about people "improving" breeds. The same problem exists over here. Yo have only to look at the beautiful German Shepherd of years ago who had strong back legs like this one:
http://media.dogsandpuppies.co.uk/files/instance-03/main_photo/2011/03/17/43/59/aa85ad0243b80c4effd6a9b61200481d-33677_1624197563364_1189235092_1768374_3070842_n-480x360.jpg
Now look at one of the improved versions with piddling little back legs. There are a few people who still breed dogs with good, strong legs - a lot of Police Forces do, but the problems with hips and legs have become so severe that the Kennel Club has finally had to do something about it.
http://images01.olx.co.uk/ui/8/69/98/1279322902_105586198_5-German-Shepherd-Bitch-Puppy-Scotland-1279322902.jpg
There is also a show version of the lovely Border Collie which is a very thickset animal with a coat more suited to a husky type dog from the Arctic not a working dog which has to cover all sorts of UK terrain. I could carry on ad nauseam but I'll leave it there.
Edited to add - those two of yours are lovely. :)

P.S DXW - totally agree about G. shepherds. Ours is the 'good old' one. (very loyal, too - always ready to be the backup for the dachs when she decides to take a discovery trip to the neighbour's garden - not that often any more, even dogs get mor polite with age. We had the dachs first, and got the shep. when he was almost a year old, so it was really funny to see their 'let's-be-friends' process - he soon discovered he's got to 'adjust' in size, trying to lie as flat and low as possible to get her come closer. And it worked! ;))
There is also a show version of the lovely Border Collie
DX,
Here's a Border Collie as I know it, such beauty and grace..now she may never win any ribbons trotting around an arena as she gets liver bits to perform tricks yet to me,Becca is the ultimate working Border Collie.

Nani they are gorgeous. This is Bryn, (six weeks old) Dilys his mum and some of his siblings who are engaged in the other essential art for sheepdogs - Hiking Boot Removal. Bryn is the tiny one nearest the camera - he's a plotter and thinker. He was half the size of the others but then grew and grew like a weed on a compost heap. The Akbash dog looks very like a Polar Bear, especially with those tiny ears.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/DX_Wombat/Bryn/P1011936.jpg
beaufort1 15th Jun 2012, 11:14 This is a great thread, lots of breeds I've never heard of. What sort of size is the Akbash, he/she looks huge?:)
Bryn looks to be the thinker from an early age, I love Border Collie pups. Unlike other breed pups, they are nightmare to take a walk with as they get too involved eyeing one another that forms into a tight circle until one decides to head them. 15 minute walks can easily turn into an hour.;)
Male Akbash dog on that picture is recorded at 86kg and his ears are cropped. All livestock guardian dogs of Turkey ( Akbash,Kangal and Kars dogs) gets their ears cropped at puppy stage to prevent excessive bleeding from wolf bites.
DX Wombat 15th Jun 2012, 15:37 Nani, you are right about Bryn being a thinker from an early age. He was the one who worked out that in order to get out of the stable he had to dig his way out under the door as trying to escape with the others when the door was open didn't work. They kept finding him roaming around the farmyard. Eventually the hole became big enough for the rest of them to escape but he was credited with the plan and execution of it. Dilys is a different kettle of fish. The morning after we arrived home I came downstairs to find her with her nose poking out of the top of her crate trying to work out how to get out. When he is bored with the other dogs' company or just wants to get to his owner, their dad regularly climbs a 7' high wire fence with a steel beam at the top. Madam takes after him and is very much a "LOOK OUT WORLD I'M HERE! little dog. She used to check what I did every evening before putting her to bed and as soon as she saw the hot water bottle appear she would trot into her crate and wait for it to be put in her basket and then eat her biscuit. She is a very determined little dog but has the same lovely nature as Bryn. They can both be little villains occasionally but they are great dogs to have around. As you say, collie puppies are lovely but can be a real nightmare as a group. J who sold me my two will not sell two puppies to anyone at the same time as he says they need one to one attention and it is better to wait for at least 18 months before getting a second one; that way you stand a better chance of being able to train them properly.
I find it a shame that people still chop bits off their dogs in the belief that it is better for them but that is still one lovely dog.

wonderful dogs. A friend has a couple, one of them even in the colours of our brown dachs ('hot chocolate', I'd say :) ). As the friend says, they do not need to bark even, they just sit and stare and the postman (for example) freezes. BUT, as the friends claim - the mastiffs have eaten everything in the garden, including tulips and peas (and ploughed the pea-bed thoroughly to find any single root remaining). That's why we couldn't take the pup offered for free (and think of their price!)... because the owner wanted it to be taken to the dog shows (by my daughter). We had our three then, too, of course.
P.S come to think of it, the dachs and the lab have succeeded in eating up most of the things in the garden, too. The last ones were the unsprouted peas by the dachs (last year it was the water-rat, and the year before it the crows).

(the one we know feels about the same about our dachs, who had allegedly harassed him as a pup. Which would be normal, as she just loves to harass anyone... well, have it the dachs way.)
Which brings us to the question again - WHY are dogs so unforgettable? Even if they harass you and eat the peas and whine (quietly, but persistently and piercingly) to indicate you haven't got the message well enough?
It can't be just that they're always glad to see you and don't talk back? Some people do and don't, too, after all?

http://isokoirakennels.com/stalker.jpg
Actually a show version of the lovely Border Collie but in my opinion a travesty of it and not practical for working with that over-thick coat and stumpy legs.
A few miles away from here is the Freedom of Spirit Trust For Border Collies Rescue Centre. (http://www.fostbc.org.uk/) This was written by Barabara Sykes who owns and runs it and I think you will understand why I get cross with those who mess about with them, breeding so called improvements into them.
A Simple Beauty
Barbara Sykes © 1995
The Border Collie is the epitome of all we may ever desire in a dog, a friend and a partner. Honesty, integrity and loyalty are second nature to a collie and they will work until they can go no further. Yet for all their willingness to give they are not submissive, they are proud of their heritage and they do not suffer fools gladly. Look beyond the colour of the coat and the cloak they wear labelled ‘dog’, search inside and reach its soul for once there you will be trapped in a world of unbelievable love and honesty. You will have found true beauty, for the wonderful qualities within this breed are always there waiting to be unlocked and are what make it truly beautiful. Drink in its grace, speed and stamina, for rarely has so much to come together so perfectly in so small a package.

DX,
I love the way Barbara Skyes romanticizes the working Border Collies,I haven't found one the way she describes them.
My beasts has only one thing in their mind, sheep! I'm afraid they are not quite loyal to me,they will simply walk away with whomever is nearer to the gate that separates them from sheep..However,I cannot fault them for their genetic makeup which is work till you drop, take a five minute break then back to work.
Here's the look of a non-Barbie Collie as she anxiously awaits for her command.

Nani, Barabara is actually quite down to earth when it comes to her dogs. She has a young deaf dog, Digby, who was rescued as a tiny puppy and whom she is training to work with sheep. Sheepdogs will always be my favourite dogs and they certainly keep you on your toes. Your dogs are proper, working dogs. :ok: My two are Welsh Sheepdogs from a long line of working dogs - mums and dad are working on sheep farms. Dilys is going to be doing flyball - she's tiny but very keen and fast and really enjoyed her first lesson. Bryn will have a go but he's likely to work out his own rules to make it easier for himself.

Am I allowed to add in (as I dont have a photo to upload) 2 x Shitzus..just because I love them, and they are the most loyal dogs I know (I just wish after 7 years they would s%%t outside when it rains, but I know Shitzus dont do that) but love them I do.

And of course you are allowed to add them. :ok:
Thanks Mate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And doing "proud father' bit here, I would just like to add, for those of you who dont know, the Shitzu is one of the oldest breeds in the world. It was bred my the Monguls, to protect their tents, around 3000 years ago.
So they are lovely, fluffy, loyal, and a great dog,..but the Monguls forgot how to teach them to go out of the tent to s$$t:E
