View Full Version : A380 Fuel burn/hr (in very rough numbers)

Flightglobal reports on the first LH 747-8 service FRA-IAD, that the aircraft burned 80 tons for what was 2 minutes short of an 8 hour flight. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out a rough average burn per hour.

Out of nothing but curiosity, I was wondering how that compares to the A380, and would like to ask here if someone might have an answer. Am aware it'll vary with ZFW and sector length, hence the request for just a very rough number. And since I'm basing the 747 number on a statistical sample of 1 (one), surely it can't get much worse :O

Cheers.

Well this photo:

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/6/3/5/1817536.jpg

Shows 3670 kg/hr/engine.

Which works out to roughly 16 tons/hour.

Can't get much more non scientific than this.

To my old eyes that photo appears to show around 3070 kg, not 3670 kg.

Total: 12.25 t/hr.

Had to zoom in a bit more (I'm on a 10" netbook) I guess it does say 3070.

So that works out to about 12 and a half tons.

200 kg per minute, that is about 4 to 5 times the typical fuel burn of an A 320!

Microburst is correct, 12000kg per hour. :ok:

Shock, Horror! 5 times the fuel burn in a machine that weighs 5 times as much! :)

Out of interest, can someone give me a typical figure for trip fuel (burn & reserves) between DFW & SYD & whether the flight would be payload restricted. Obviously it will depend upon the headwinds on the day.

OTOH, the full fuel load of an A380, if I remember correctly, is more than three complete A320s at MTOW (airframes, pax, cargo, fuel).

254t of fuel in the 380 vs. 234t for 3 A320s at MTOW. That sucker has tanks!
