Anyone got a backstory on this? (ABC Report):

A plane was forced to make an emergency landing in scrub near Birdsville in western Queensland last night.

Police says the single-engine plane was travelling from Alice Springs to Birdsville when the pilot reported an engine failure.

Senior Constable Neil McShane says the plane landed safely in bush near the runway and three occupants escaped injury.

"About 5.30 we got a call from communications in Mount Isa that a plane's engine had failed about a mile from the Birdsville airstrip," he said.

"Fortunately it made a successful landing about a kilometre north of the runway.

"No one was injured but we did muster all the emergency services here.

"Everyone came down and fortunately it had a happy ending."

Bloody stiff luck to have an engine failure after a 300+nm trip across the desert, just prior to landing. But then again, lucky it weren't in the middle.

Aircraft was DDU and if the pilot ever reads this, on the whole did a pretty good job on the radio mate given the quick nature of the event.

If the owner was flying it then he's an ATC and works the Tower at YBAS.

Any news on the extent of damage and recovery operation?
