As is well known, in signs "this way to the airport", the arrow is usually replaced by a simple airliner shape.

Recently at a country lane junction in the countryside behind Manchester Airport in England I found a home-painted "this way to the airport" sign where the pointer shape was not an airliner but a Spitfire or similar, in black on white.

Is this for pilots or motorists to see?;)

Left over from WW2 to show Luftwaffe where to go.....

Obviously not on the Wythenshawe side of the airport.....a burnt out car sign would have been more apt had it been.....:p
