Up to 10,000 plane-spotters are expected to descend on Manchester Airport to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most luxurious aircraft.
The 787 Dreamliner will land in the city for the first time next Monday night – and plans are being put in place to celebrate its arrival.

As revealed last week in the M.E.N., the jet will make a pitstop at the airport as part of a world tour. Airport bosses have announced details of special arrangements to welcome the jet. They expect the majority of spotters to turn out on Tuesday – when the plane will take-off for a mid-morning short demonstration flight over Britain.

The flight will be operated by Thomson Airways, Boeing’s first UK customer for the aircraft, and airport workers expect the day to rival the arrival of the A380 – the world’s largest passenger plane – which touched down here for the first time in September 2010.

Preparations are already in full swing for the visit – with everything from an exhibition at the runway visitor park, where most of the enthusiasts will gather, to aviation experts being on hand to answer questions and explain why the Dreamliner is such a unique aircraft.

The park will also stay open late on Monday night to accommodate the crowds. The plane is expected to touch down on the runway at about 7pm.

The Dreamliner has a special cabin with windows that can be dimmed and it can hold more than 250 passengers.

At more than 55 feet tall and with a wingspan of 197ft, it is one of the biggest planes in the world. Its green technology also means air in the cabin is cleaner and reduces motion sickness.

The plane will come to Manchester after starting its journey in Seattle. It will first stop at Heathrow, then Manchester, before heading on a tour of Europe. Andrew Harrison, chief operating officer for the Manchester Airports Group, said:

“It will be really exciting to finally see the Dreamliner touch down on our runway and we’re planning to pull out all the stops to give her thousands of local fans the chance to see her.”

I think the DL is a great piece of tech now it is finally here, but do these developments really make it prime fodder for spotters? It is neither the biggest nor the fastest, 10k sounds a little optimistic for me for what is very much a mid-table jet, perfect though it may be for regional markets like Manchester.

Well in cattle it probably is, but why does that make it spottable?

IMO it's quite a boring looking aircraft, doesn't look special, and will be a run of the mill airliner that nobody will take a second glance at in a few years.

10,000 'spotters' is quite optimistic.

One has to admire Boeing's PR people. Eversince they came up with the optimistic name [DL ] they have tried to get that name imprinted into and onto everything. But - it's just another big, fat twin to carry as much as possible as far as possible. Which is all well and good and what the company have to do.

But it scores, I suggest, Zero on the styling scale which their wavy blue lines cannot disguise. Few pax know what a/c they are on and are never going to make their ticket purchases based on the a/c.

Once again, as remarked, journos accept the sales fit-out of how the cabins might look, if the carrier wanted fewer seats. it reminds me of the nonsense about shower rooms and many bars and lounge areas in countless PR statements down the decades.

Peeps buy the cheapest possible seat and everyone knows that!

I'm fortunate to be at Boeing Field at the moment, looking at 3 787's, one of which is leaving Saturday for its UK tour, speaking to the dispatchers it's planned to LHR first?

I work for Thomson and there is rumours that they wanted a flyby of our head office at LTN?! Can't see it but who knows!

However if the 10000 spectators want some practice, we a planned into MAN about 0600 this Friday in our latest 738, straight from the factory, can't promise a flyby though! See you there?!

From an internal communication today, the 787 will perform a "flyby" at LTN at midday on Tuesday 24th April. (Weather permitting)

It will then continue to MAN landing at 1300 local

Thanks for that RR. Boeing still get credit for having thought up the idea. I guess that they wanted to coin the name, rather than have it named for them. Also, having got the wonderful name 'jumbo' that has now become the 'hoover' word and is lost for their promotional activities.

As I recall, when Singapore started with the 747-300 and the 'SUD' as it was called, they attempted the name 'Megatop' but that never took off (poor pun intended).

Boeing 787 Dreamliner set for regular flights to Mexico and Florida from Manchester Airport

Alice McKeegan April 20, 2012

One of the world’s most luxurious aircraft will fly from Manchester Airport permanently from next May, the M.E.N. can reveal.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner will land in the city for the first time on Monday night with up to 10,000 plane-spotters expected to flock to the airport to catch a glimpse of it.

And now Thomson Airways has announced that the jet will operate on its routes from Manchester to Cancun, Mexico, and Sanford, Florida, from May next year.

Flight frequencies are yet to be confirmed because next year’s timetable hasn’t been finalised but the aircraft will be a regular fixture in the region’s skies.

Hailed as the greatest advance in air travel since the development of Concorde in the early 1970s, experts say the Dreamliner will ‘revolutionise the passenger experience’.

The Dreamliner has a special cabin with windows that can be darkened and it can hold more than 250 passengers.

At more than 55 feet tall and with a wingspan of 197 feet, it is one of the biggest planes in the world. Its green technology also means air in the cabin is cleaner and reduces motion sickness.

Chris Browne, managing director of Thomson Airways, said:

“We’re thrilled to be flying the aircraft in our summer 2013 programme from Manchester– giving holiday-makers in the north the chance to travel on this amazing new aircraft.”

Andrew Harrison, chief operating officer for the Manchester Airports Group, added:

“There has already been huge public interest in Dreamliner’s visit next week which I am sure will help to boost sales.”

Thomson and its parent company TUI Travel will be the first in Britain to take delivery of the 787 Dreamliner early next year – with 13 in its fleet.

The plane will make a pit-stop at Manchester on Monday evening as part of a world tour and it will take off for a short demonstration flight the following day. Airport workers expect the day to rival the arrival of the A380 – the world’s largest passeenger plane – which touched down here for the first time in September 2010.

Boeing is bringing its branded 787 Dreamliner aircraft to the UK this week as part of its "World tour".

The aircraft will be at Manchester on Tuesday 24th April and anyone wishing to see the aircraft is recommended to do so from the Runway Visitor Park from around 10am onwards on Tuesday morning.

The aircraft is expected to arrive at Manchester late on Monday night, at around 22.15.

However due to the fact the aircraft will be arriving during the hours of darkness, anyone wishing to view the aircraft is recommended to do so on Tuesday, from the Runway Visitor Park.

The 787 Dreamliner will depart Manchester at approximately 11:00 on Tuesday morning on a demonstration flight.

She is then due to return to Manchester shortly after and is due to land at around 13:05.

On landing, she will taxi past the Runway Visitor Park so that spectators who have come to welcome ‘her’ to Manchester will have the opportunity to view her up close before she parks up.

The aircraft will then remain at Manchester until the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Please note that all times are subject to change, but any further updates will be available via Twitter (@manairport) and this webpage.

NOW DUE AT 2315,

Still showing as 2215 on MAN Airport arrivals as of 1945. (Was originally 1900 until the delay at BFI.)

No - where the EK 777 used to park when they used T2, so right next to the T1 exit ramp and T1 car park. (EK now in T1 usually Stand 12 on the end of Pier B)

Thanks guys - down to 4000 north of Brum right now, will keep an eye on him - about 7.8 oktas of lowish showery cloud in Croydon, so spotting him when he eventually joins the approach may be a problem!

Ditto re. WFH Charley :ok: although a few of us tend to have a sneeky look in the office aswell when something interesting's happening.

As for BOE787, as of now (0948L) she's now headed north and is over The Pennines east of MAN at FL160.

She's gone to Oslo this morning for her next visit on the Dream Tour. Video of her landing there here :

I see that the Russian Carrier Transaero Airlines signed an order for four Dreamliners on April 9th. with delivery of first aircraft expected 'later this year'.

If this delivery is correct, I feel there will be some airlines a bit more than pigged-off having endured delays in the region of four years.

Some airlines may have deferred their delivery date, allowing Transaero to receive theirs quicker?
