I wouldn't worry about the DT article. In reality, and given the parlous reporting in the DT of late, its probably a Grob/Glider/runway sweeper that's been grounded/superceded by 'jet powered Muslamic ray guns', or worse.

D Notices - went the way of 2 mail deliveries a day and milk in boittles, I'm afraid.

Oh dear. How sad. My heart's bleeding.

I'm sure the Waddo car parks will still be full - plenty of pointless meetings will be conjured up on a whim.

4 engines, check. Landing gear, check. 2 wings...hang on a minute....

Could be interesting with the Olympics coming up unless it's a quick fix.

"There is no loss of operational capability."

The spokeswoman stressed that the Sentry is one of a range of aircraft capable of conducting surveillance and other options, including five Sentinel R1 aircraft, are being utilised.

The kind of statement that could encourage a bean counter somewhere to ask why Sentry is needed in the first place. Options? We can't afford to give you options in times of austerity. :ugh:

"There is no loss of operational capability."

The aircraft as a type is grounded but there is no loss of operational capability?

So why do they normally waste all that fuel by taking off, then? Are they just joyriding and claiming the rations? :}

My apologies - I could offer various excuses for not putting the link in before, but I bet you've heard them all before and I'll just accept being stupid for now...

Sentinel seems to be an amazing platform. As well as the overland role, according to the MoD it can assume the MPA role and fill in for the AWACS.

I think they should consider fitting a gun and AMRAAM. Then we can get rid of Typhoon as well!

Grounding the fleet is nothing unusual. During my 3 years on the flying frisbee the fleet was probably grounded at least half a dozen times (examples that spring to mind are 100% inspection and swap out of the CFM56s, cracks in flap/slat brackets, cracks in the frisbee 'clam shells', etc...). All perfectly normal as parts start to wear out for the first time.

I also remember the "amazing" Sentinel being grounded for a wiring snag with the radar and being so unexpected that they only had 2 sets of bolts for the radome - took weeks to resolve.

Probably nothing to see here and move on (as is usual in the press these days)

whatever happened to D-notices?

D Notices were only ever advisory. Can you imagine the owner/editor of any British newspaper taking a blind bit of notice of an advisory, when they have been blithely breaking the law on phone-tapping etc for so many years now?

Assuming that nothing has changed lately, the E-3Ds are the UK Component of the NATO AEW Force run by the NATO AEW Force Command at SHAPE. Routine day to day tasking is by NATO, with the option for the UK to remove aircraft from NATO Tasking if important national tasking takes priority. (Putting this simply - it can be a little more complicated than that). If the E-3D cannot fulfil its NATO exercise tasking then a NATO E-3A can be tasked in its stead (as, in the past, E-3Ds have replaced E-3As when they have grounded). Hence no operational effect as I assume that no priority National tasking is taking place or being planned at the moment.

I do wish people would know all the facts before they start passing their ill informed opinions......

Operational "Effect" and "Capability" - two different things? One is when used, the other whether it is used or not; or is that too simple?

Do we still have platform "Capability Working Groups"? First item on next agenda. Losing Sentry has no effect on OC. Meeting closed, permanently.

If we can cope without it, do we need to retain it...

Are they just joyriding and claiming the rations?

I can neither confirm nor deny that hideous allegation.

Well sitting here under the Waddo MATZ there's not been any "Frizbees" seen in the skies around here recently at all. Saw a Sentinal yesterday afternoon and have seen a few King Airs but no AWACS!

Is there any truth in the rumour that some suits were seen in and around the Red DC3 with the bulge under it, at Coventry the other day?

http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo119/Rickskid/dak.jpg

Is the real reason that Mr Cameron wants those Griffon Spits back from Burma so that they can be used as interceptors in conjuction with the Dak? They could be quickly upgraded with Link One and opeated by BBMF personnel out of Northolt just like they were 72 years ago, you could even put the Ground Crews in tents on the airfield.

Jackanicko I think you should look into this one.
