Hi All

I'm looking for information to aid a career decision. Currently I'm an experienced airline TRI/TRE (UK), late 40s, 12000hrs 8000 P1 with a one time opportunity that could be heading my way.

For those in the know, can I make a decent living freelancing on the BD700 as Captain, TRE and/or possibly FAA TCE and if so what are the current rates? PMs prefered in case discussions ensue!

Generally, contracting is a tough way to make ends meet.

First, you need to pay for your initial type and recurrent twice a year. For a BD700 I'd expect initial to be around $45-50,000 US by the time you pay for airfare and hotel (that's an estimate). Recurrent is $25,000 x twice a year. You can quickly calculate how many days a year you need to fly to recover these costs. If you find someone who uses you routinely, they may help pay, but don't count on it.

Secondly, I doubt you will get Captains pay anytime soon. I'm not trying to start an age old argument, but you didn't say you had much experience in the corporate world. Many (most all) corporate flight departments go with proven International Captains who have years and years of private flying experience.

If you have an opportunity to take a Global job, realize what you're getting into and giving up. I cross a dozen time zones, wait five days, then head back and take 3-7 days off, then do it again. This is much more difficult on your body than a 30 hour turn.

To answer your question about pay, expect $500-$800 US a day for typed but no time in type SIC pay, and $1,000 to $1,500 once you get 500 hours.

What is it you dislike about airline flying? I've had 4 friends go back to scheduled service in the past six months just to get a schedule and circadian rhythm.
