I hope - but doubt - that the programme recalls how close BN was to being pushed overboard from HERMES into the sea, after the sinking of ATLANTIC CONVEYOR.

I am sure it will recall the quite remarkable job it did in 82, thanks to the remarkable efforts of those flying and maintaining it.

Or should it be "her"?? (very conscious, now, of the need to get the grammar/spelling write on this forum!!)

@phantomstreaker - how did you manage to set your Sky+ to record? Mine only goes 7 days ahead. I've also tried "Never Miss" on the Sky website but it doesn't recognise "Frontline Battle Machines". :confused:

Back at base - as Ian was patched up - Mike found out that the helicopter, Bravo November, was The longest serving helicopter in the Royal Air Force.

... that he had had a ride in that day.

Given that BN has seen service in every conflict since the falklands should it really be earmarked for retirmemt to BBMF as a true reminder and memorial

When it cannot fly no longer perhaps it can replace the fake Bn in the current falklands exhibit .

I would love to see a comparison of the "A" model Chinook in the Museum at Fort Rucker....and a current "F" model or even the MH-47 used by the 160th SOAR. The old girl has had a few "face lifts" in her time!

The difference between the original "A" and the "C" was impressive....but would pale compared to the "F".

Watching the programme it would be easy to think that 'Langers' and his crew were the only crew that flew BN. We should not forget that NG and his co-pilot CM also did an excellent job: CM IIRC got a MID. Sadly NG found the stress too much but he did fly all his missions brilliantly supported by CM. WE should not write this crew out of the history of BN or the FI.

IMHO NG was shabbily treated when he got home.

I represent that remark - I was the Duty Air Engineer on deck when BN landed on Hermes. We marshalled her into a couple of spots stbd side aft of the mirror. After a brief respite, Flyco (balding Lt Cdr in Flyco) called over the loop "Duty Engineer on Deck " - I raised my arm in acknowledgement to which Flyco said "Could you get that Chinook folded - its b*****ing up my 7 & 8 spots for operating Sea Kings" - Needless to say , after recovering from our hysterics, Flyco understood that Hermes had no engineering capability to 'fold the Chinook' -so next day BN proceeded inshore accompanied by an RN Lynx - something to do with BN not having the right radio fit to interoperate with the land forces - but as to getting pushed over the side - the subject was never discussed.

Of course some of what I have just writ is a load of b******cks - it was port side aft of the mirror not stbd side !! - I plead being a WAFU not a Fishhead !!

What an amazing programme and aircraft that was! It hit the water at over 100mph and the only loss was the door containing the maps and BATCO.
