Hi
I am trying to i/d a person who did a series on flying in WW1. The series was on BBC TV and the presenter (who I think flew in WW1 or the 1920s ) always wore a short sleeved shirt and I think had a strange name (French I think ). He seemed to know a lot about WW1 flying and I would like to see if there are any video/cd's of the series. If anyone knows who this was or the name of the series It would be a great help ??:{:{:{

Not de Cadenet I think. He did host a short-lived series in the late '90s called "The Air Show" (http://tv.msn.com/tv/series-episodes/the-air-show/) but I don't think that covered any WW1 stuff.

And he would have had no personal experience as he was born in 1945.

I remember the series too. I think he had flown in the First World War and then bagged his way into the RAF for the Second one! Didn't he fly Mosqquitos? He recalled, on camera, that he was involved in an investigation when a number of Mossies crashed in the Far East. IIRC it was the glue in the wings that was failing.

After the war he managed to get a trip in a Vulcan by badgering the CinC at a dining in night when I imagine he might have been, shall we say, in a generous mood.

His name? That's the one thing I'm not sure about but try looking up Chabboux, Chabbeaux. Like you I think it was French in origin. Good luck.

Charles Chabot's three, first broadcast on TV 1980's, films may still be available.

See below

CHABOT SOLO: THE HISTORY OF AVIATION (3 x 60’)

Historical Aviation

These three one hour films, which can be run as one-offs or as a trilogy, tell the story of flight through the twinkling eyes of an octogenarian who started flying in 1918. Charles Chabot flew everything from the cross Channel Bleriot, to the Concorde at age 88. His life was filled with amusing anecdotes and numerous firsts. Incredible archive footage and music from the period complete this classic trilogy of the history of flight.
