Pamplin said the CC-130 Hercules had conducted its refuelling exercise and was doing touch and go routines — landing and taking off — and was only about 40 metres in the air when the loadmaster in the rear discovered the fire and notified the crew.

“He (the pilot) landed straight ahead and brought the airplane to a stop and . . . the entire crew evacuated (from the plane)” Pamplin said, noting that it is one of the five especially configured Hercules aircraft in the Canadian Forces that can conduct air-to-air refuelling.

Very quick thinking - well done that team!

Embarrassing if you were the guy that tripped over when running away though!

An interesting incident from a professional point of view. I assume he must have been on the longest, 10000 ft runway, but it was still quick thinking to land ahead from 120 ft as he would probably have had no more than 4000 ft length remaining.

Any higher and there would have been insufficient length to put it down & the ac might not have survived a circuit. A very quick, and gutsy decision.
