Red Checkers Plane Forced To Land Near Waiouru | Stuff.co.nz (http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6326304/Air-force-plane-forced-to-land)
Seems this chap did rather well. And, just to note, the tussock is quite deep and the road a busy arterial route.

These guys are very, very good at what they do, and what he did, while not normal, would be well within the scope of what he was trained to do! He walked away from it...successful emergency landing.

For those that don't know it , Waiouru is the main NZ Army Base in the central North Island and is surrounded by largely useless country used as a training area. Think Salisbury Plain and you'd be close!

Think Salisbury Plain at +1100' ASL, with active volcanoes, tundra, wild horses and NO ONE about. Yep, like SPTA.

Alright, it's nothing at all like Salisbury Plain, but then I was just making a very broad brush comparison for those who might have NO knowledge whatsoever of what the Desert Road area and Waiouru are like.

The poor pilot said

There's a contradiction in terms, never thought poor and pilot would be used in the same sentence .... :O

Glad he was OK

Glad that the Pilot is OK..... The Red Checkers were missed at the Tauranga Air Day but the rest of the flying display was great.... the Hunter display was awesome good day out, hope the weather is as kind for them today.
