Fatal Tiger Moth crash at Maryborough Victoria

TWO people are dead after a vintage plane clipped trees and exploded in a fireball at a country airstrip in central Victoria.

It is understood the Tiger moth aircraft was taking off from Maryborough Airport just after 5pm when the tragedy happened.

Witnesses reportedly told of a seeing "ball of flames" moments before the plane crashed.

Emergency services crews remain at the scene.

John had just spent mega bucks setting up his DeHavilland collection for display as "The Old Aviators Flying Museum." Quite a setup indeed.

John was a de Havilland enthusiast who, apart from a mini-museum in his hangar, had a Chippie or two, a Tiger, a Fox Moth, a Vampire 'static' plus a Vampire under restoration to fly. The hangar and the aircraft were in immaculate condition.

A tragic loss to his family, friends, the town of Maryborough and historic aviation.
