View Full Version : I've been booked to fly return with Emirates on their A380 in April - will it happen?
Omlaaay 21st Jan 2012, 10:41 I've been booked to fly return with Emirates on their A380 - what are the chances of me not flying on the A380 because of the structural issues? Or will they have them sorted by then? I reeeeeally want to go on one! :ugh:

EK0006 on the 1/4/12 and EK0005 on the 14/4/12 -
They're bringing the A380s in on these routes on the 25/3/12, a week before I fly. At the minute, they currently operate 777-300ER on these routes.
What are the chances of me not flying on the A380 because of the structural issues? Or will they have them sorted by then? I reeeeeally want to go on one! :ugh: The route is LHR - DXB and back.
CabinCrewe 21st Jan 2012, 10:49 Yes.......
SWBKCB 21st Jan 2012, 11:57 Agreed - see attached link. Nothing to suggest delays, let alone cancellations, etc...
EASA orders wing checks on 20 A380s (http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/easa-orders-wing-checks-on-20-a380s-367175/)
Topspotter 21st Jan 2012, 12:03 The aircraft wil be inspected , chances are it wont even require any repair, and if it does it will im sure quickly be carried out, no dramas, there not grounding the thing there just carrying out a AD
PAXboy 21st Jan 2012, 14:38 Omlaaay, check the other thread in this forum about the subject, which has some detail. Also, the Tech forum.
Omlaaay 21st Jan 2012, 16:02 Hi PaxBoy - sorry to be an inconvenience, but you don't happen to have the link to the thread in this forum do you - I can't seem to find it :ouch:
Found the one in the Tech Forum though and I'm optimistic both flights will still be operated by the A380 (fingerscrossed!)
EmadIV 22nd Jan 2012, 02:57 I'll do the talking — I think this (http://www.pprune.org/passengers-slf-self-loading-freight/474833-a380.html) is the thread being referred to.
Omlaaay 22nd Jan 2012, 14:05 Thank you EmadIV - I'm getting very paranoid now Emirates will decide not to put the A380 on EK6/5 routes on the 25th of March and keep the 777! But that's probably me just overreacting, I hope!
EmadIV 24th Jan 2012, 22:51 Do not worry! It is simply a minor 'crack' in the internal structure of the wing. It was not even found on Emirates aircraft yet. Believe me you have the right to want the A380 so bad — the 777 really is nothing compared to the A380. Boeing fanboys and 777 fans can bash on that until they travel on one. No matter how good or modern the cabin is. At least, in the A380 and A330, you don't get tossed all around if some 2 knots wind makes way. The 777 is very turbulent on approach (I flew on 20 different 777s and it can't be a coincidence). The cabin is seriously loud and you hear 12 different wind noises coming from all directions http://forums.flightsimlabs.com/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif! The A380 on the other hand has the quietest cabin ever, a smooth takeoff, quiet Engine Alliance GP7200s, etc. Opt for the A380!

I don't mind if you choose to express your preference for an aircraft type based upon criteria that you actually understand but you risk appearing foolish when discussing matters that you apparently don't.
The A380 is an excellent aircraft, and very quiet in the cabin. The 777 (both variants) is also an excellent aircraft, and while not as quiet as the A380, it is quieter than earlier aircraft types and not so loud as to be an inconvenience. During cruise, much of the noise heard in aircraft cabins is generated by the air-conditioning rather than the engines.
I have flown on rather a lot of 777's. The aircraft is no better, or worse, in turbulence and on approach than any other. The operating economics, especially on the -300 are outstanding - one of the reasons that it has been so successful.
I have flown four long-haul sectors on the A380, one of which enjoyed 270 empty seats: The aircraft is excellent on a certain kind or route but you would be most unwise to assume that the global market for it will be huge.
A2QFI 25th Jan 2012, 12:31 It is a means of moving from A to B. It is made of aluminium and composites shaped into a tube and has seats in it. Does it really matter what it is called? I don't care what I am flying in; I listen to safety brief, read the card in the seat pocket in front of me and read a book or go to sleep!
EmadIV 25th Jan 2012, 17:39 It could be that the weather was too bad on my approach. The only thing I find good about the 777 when compared to earlier aircraft is the quieter engine. The GE90 almost gets silent on thrust reduction unlike in the A330.
you risk appearing foolish when discussing matters that you apparently don't.Sorry if that's what I looked like, but I'm saying what I experienced. I don't hate the 777 or anything, but it's more of an over-rated aircraft.
During cruise, much of the noise heard in aircraft cabins is generated by the air-conditioning rather than the engines.I know that part, otherwise you'd hear the GE90 whine at FL370. Don't get me wrong (like you did), I never meant the 777 offers a bad experience. I meant the A380 is superior, that's it. The A320 and the 747 have much louder engines (even the A330's P&Ws are more annoying than the GE90), but the A380 is quieter than all of them. One perk in the 777 is that it usually offers greater seats than most other aircraft, in some cases, I hear reports (not sure on that) that the SIA economy class seats on their 777-300ER are better than the EK A380 ones. But it's not the best.
The one point I need to make is that the 777 probably has the quietest reverse thrust (and many will agree on that). On the GE90 I didn't hear a hiss or rumble like on all other aircraft, including the A380.
In all it's not a bad aircraft but with the 787 now setting a new standard for cabin quietness with much better air circulation the 777 is 'losing out'.
you would be most unwise to assume that the global market for it will be huge.
Clearly the market for the A380 is smaller than that for the 777 and other aircraft. I have mentioned this in another post about cabin quietness, where I hoped that the 787 is quieter (or as quiet) as the A380 in terms of cabin noise because in a matter of years we'll see more 787s than A380s flying globally.
TightSlot 26th Jan 2012, 07:56 Seats/Interiors are BFE (Buyer Furnished Equipment)
And you should try the Air France 3-4-3 B777 Economy configuration! Did they really need to try and squeeze an extra seat into every row? :-(

Regardless of that, most airlines (at least the ones I've flown with) seem to install better IFE and seats on their 777s than on their A330s.

Tried that 10-abreast seating config and it did feel cramped. I was lucky, though, because most of the seats were not taken! You should try an A330 with 3-3-3.
