BELLE ISLE - The FAA reports two people are dead after a helicopter crashed in the Belle Isle area this morning.

FAA spokesperson Lynn Lunsford tells News 2 that the Robinson R-44 helicopter went down in a marshy area near Wax Lake, about 13 miles southwest of Morgan City, around 7:30 a.m.

He said law enforcement told him the two people who were on the helicopter died, and the tail number was N369TL. It was registered to Cenac Marine Services.

Cenac (suh-NAK') Marine Services attorney Berwick Duval identified the passenger as Lanny Ledet (luh-DAY'), manager of the company's Golden Ranch Plantation in Gheens (GAYNZ).

He says the pilot was not a Cenac employee.

Authorities have not released the pilot's name.

Boats and officers from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Coast Guard are deployed in that area to assist with recovery efforts.
