Maybe, maybe not.

IIRC Visa 457 entitles them to work for max 3 years (5?) before returning home.

They are well managed by Immigration. (we had one working with us once from china, and Imigration checked on him regularily)

I'd rather one of those come into the country, experience what we have to offer, pay his taxes then go home. ( The one I worked with has applied to move here legit). Your other choice is they arrive illegally, suck up social security for a while, then take your job....if they choose to contribute, whilst bringing out 300 of their closest relatives for social security.

If you think this is a cheap out for the employer, then you are very mistaken. I looked at it for my own business, and it was going to cost me no less than employing a local tradie.

.. and be careful what you wish for! If you wish every foreign-born worker out of the country, then the corollary is that every Australian-born working overseas (like me) comes back... :rolleyes:

I can't comment on the true need for 457 workers in this category, but to clear up a couple of things:

1) The standard length of a 457 visa is four years, but you can apply for shorter timeframes, and it can be renewed for up to 2 years more after the initial four (and renewed even further under certain circumstances)

2) I was on a 457 visa for four years and never once "checked up upon" . My visa was in the IT area and I'm from the USA, so perhaps I wasn't considered very risky. The only contact with DIAC was during the application phase, and then later when I applied for residency. I am not even sure how they verified if I still worked for the nominated employer - because my employer pays me via overseas wire transfer I am basically invisible to the Australian banking and tax system (except when I file tax returns).

3) The visa is indeed expensive for the employer (I had to agree to a bond to pay back the costs if I left before the first two years). I am now on another bond for my residency visa, which is a whole 'nother can of worms...

4) The visa is supposed to include a test to verify that the same skills are not already available in Australia. My employer never advertised my position, and never claimed they did - they just wrote some statement saying how my particular experience was unique. DIAC doesn't really have any way of knowing any different and it seemed like the whole process was just rubber stamped. Fine with me :)

(All of this was done with immigration counsel and according to current law and practice - nothing dodgy - just it seems to me the system wouldn't be particularly robust in terms of keeping out people who have a willing employer and the money to pay for such counsel.)

ALG have advertised and I saw one from Sigma the other day also.

I am still getting regular emails from Macro and they have plenty on their books. Jethro seems to think there are some new contacting companies popping up also.

Rubbish, I only work for CX because they cannot source sufficient numbers of locals to do the job, same for ALL other expats O/S.

So here in Oz we should be no different, ONLY employ expats here if no locals can do the job.

It's not hard to fathom.

The guy I worked with was a chinese national. He was here on a 457 for 3 years, as that was the time his company in China would permit him to be away and still have a job to return to. The officials at the time were visiting him roughly every 3 months. I doubt very much that he was working in the industry he entered the country on the 457 for, but that didn't seem to matter to them.

Beside some punctuation marks ? ;) I don't understand what you are trying to say. There seems to be plenty of work on again.
Very few aircraft engineering jobs are advertised, - more often I would get an email or phone call. The calls certainly tapered off about the same time as the adverts did though.

I am seeing the same email activity now that we would have experienced about 4 years ago. I thought things were looking good within the industry.

I think I am following, but the advert is only for AME's. Surely that is not a problem and it is hardly going to threaten the position of anyone who has been around for a while, is diligent and has a few smarts.

I thought it was good news and showed we are moving back into an area of growth. Aren't you on the books of some of the contracting companies Jethro ?
