View Full Version : This is it - the last BIG BASH

DINNER DANCE

October 20th 2012.

Come to a night to remember

It will be held at the Croydon Park Hotel, Altyre Road, Croydon, Surrey, a very good venue with good facilities including pool, gym and Jacuzzi. It has a large room for the function, a raised dance floor and a band. You can check out the hotel on www.croydonparkhotel.com (http://www.croydonparkhotel.com/) – near to East Croydon Station just 5 minutes walk away and West Croydon Station half a mile away. There is a 30 minute train service from East Croydon to Gatwick and Victoria, which runs all night.

However, I would encourage people to check out the services to satisfy their own travel needs.

What is special about this bash? If you are a regular user of PPRuNe, you will benefit - there being unused funds from the PPRuNe fund. So costs will be much lower for starters.

There will be room for 200 and the form the bash will take is a dinner/dance and if you are a fan of the big band sound I am delighted to say that I have booked THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA (under the direction of Ray McVay.) They will play from 9.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. and 11.00 to 12.00 p.m and a bar will remain open as long as the are 'customers. The band itself will make for a great evening and would normally cost around £35-£45 per head at concerts the orchestra plays all year round. You can view their website here www.glennmillerorchestra.co.uk/ (http://www.glennmillerorchestra.co.uk/)

Dress will be formal as a special for the ladies, who requested it a couple of times. The wearing of uniforms is optional.

COST: For the ‘regulars’, as a couple, you will pay for one place only £35. For singles the price is £17.50 (half-price). Dinner consists of 3 courses plus coffee. There will be wine on each table which is included in the price. Any additional drinks at dinner must be paid for to the hotel. As before there are NO refunds.

ROOM prices will be £80 whether double or single with breakfast included. Considering that previous bashes had rooms priced at £75 even as long ago as 2006 I think it is very fair. There will be no problem with two people sharing. I will say no more. ;)

There will be NO room for anyone who wishes to attend to see the Glenn Miller Orchestra only. It is not an option as there is not enough room – sorry.

Everyone attending will be on a table of 10 and must be seated by 1845. I will need an idea of numbers soonest. I must get the minimum of 200 to make great night. First come first served is going to be important.

There is a bar dedicated to PPRuNe only, which will also act as an ante-room prior to dinner and afterwards.

We will have a guest of honour - a very important GoH. I am also inviting special guests to share the usual PPRuNe welcome and hospitality. I expect to have two or three BoB pilots – hopefully one or two who fought from Croydon. All guests will be specially chosen to join us. I also plan to invite 3 or 4 heroes from Headley Court.

Well, there you are. I really would like to make this the bash of all bashes and have as many people as we can a cope with. As I said 200 will the top end so I suggest you book a place soonest.

I have to say that when you book I will take it as definite – just to say you have booked but there will be flexibility until we go firm - then that’s it. Payment will not be required until 2-3 months nearer the date.

I have reserved over 40 rooms and you should declare your intentions with the hotel.

Ask as many questions as you like. You have 10 months to make up your mind but please say NOW if you will be attending.

There will a link shortly for you to add your name (including your proper one) which go on your invitation card – yes even an invitation card for this last bash.

You gonna like this! OK, OK I did 'lie' but it WILL be a good 'un. :D

I salute you for going to the enormous trouble to organize such a brilliant evening and thank you for doing so. Cheetahs are getting a trifle old and decrepit to cavort much but there should be two of us with you nonetheless.

PPRuNe Pop - Definitions change over the years, so does "dress formal" still mean DJs (black tie)?

Or "Tux" if you are under 35 or a cousin ;)

Hey, PPRuNe Pop, I emailed the Croydon park hotel, to reserve my boudoir, and their Jackie Little says "we do not seem to have a booking in the name of PPRuNe Bash, could this be under another name?"" ??????

PPRuNe Pop
11th Jan 2012, 21:11
No. Its just that you are a bit previous! I will be attending the hotel during the next couple of weeks to finalise the details. I would hang on a bit. I'll let everyone know when booking rooms can be done.

Folks. The amount of interest and numbers is worrying.

I made a point of asking to hear from you if you were thinking of coming to this d/d because I have to be sure that I will get at least 150 to justify spending the money. Deposits, non-refundable, will be required in two weeks and I will not be prepared lay those out if I feel uncomfortable about going ahead - that would just not be right. I have kept the cost down for those coming so that you benefit.

The TOTAL number indicating they will attend so far is 25 - that is NOT good!

This WILL be a great night out. It will be a classic and if you interested please put your name down. Thank you to those who have already done so.

Where can you go for £17.50, have a 3 course meal, dance to one of the best orchestras in the land and have a great time amongst good friends?

She says: does this Corydon place have shops?

I shall sit out the dancing if you don't mind (unless the band strikes up the Thieving Magpie)

Yours in anticipation

Don, don't panic. Some of us don't read PPRuNe as often as we used to. So last night was the first I heard of this.

Would I miss it? Not on your life, despite the fact I may be moving house around then so things could get complicated. I assume I still count as a 'regular', despite the fact I can't remember when I last posted.

So, please count me in for TWO.

Folks, I am sorry to have to tell you that I am cancelling the 20th October bash.

It was essential from the word go that the numbers attending had to be right. They have fallen well short with last post to confirm on 19th.

The risk increased daily with only 34 people declaring the wish to attend. Deposits would be required this week amounting to some £2000 - as non-refundable. With other costs in the pipeline those funds would not be safe. That is unacceptable, and I could not take the risk. I had to be sure of at least 90 by Friday and it was clearly NOT going to happen.

I have never had to cancel a bash before and I hoped I never would but, as they say, there’s always a first time.

I have to thank all those who have supported previous bashes, and even this one, but with a history of dwindling numbers - and interest -any bash now is always going to be problematical.

Sorry again, but please do organise your own as you wish on this forum.

Don
