English Channel Xmas Eve 2pm

Evening all

I've asked on Spotters Corner to no avail, so perhaps someone here knows the answer. I was walking between Dover and Deal at just after 2pm on Xmas eve when I saw a formation of maybe 6 piston engined aircraft flying west up the Channel, a few miles off the coast and seemingly tracking along the coast. Any clues anyone ?
