Does Thames Water know something that we don't?

A water main serving Royal Wootton Bassett and RAF Lyneham is being replaced after bursting 30 times in the last 10 years.

Thames Water will be replacing three kilometres of the 16-inch main with a bigger and much more robust 20-inch pipe between Ashton Keynes water works and Flaxlands reservoir.

The work is essential to try and prevent the pipe bursting again but will require a 16-week closure of Ashton Road from just north of Gosditch to the Three Bridges.

Andrew Popple, Thames Water’s Programme Delivery Manager, said: “We appreciate the significant disruption this will cause but the work is vital.
"This pipe bursts repeatedly causing disruption and damage and we are committed to doing everything we can to try and put an end to that.
“The latest burst was in August when we had to close the road to repair it, we want to try and prevent this kind of inconvenient unplanned work by making the pipe fit for the future.

“The only way we can safely do the work is to close the road and run the new pipe under it.”

Work on replacing the pipe will start on Monday, March 12. The road will be closed until Friday, June 29. Traffic will be diverted along the B4040 through Cricklade, along the B419 and on to Spine Road. Access for local residents will be maintained where possible. Following the completion on the work on the road, Thames Water will then be replacing the section of pipe in nearby fields and using ‘no-dig’ technology to go under Minety at the crossroad of The Common and Station Road. There are no planned road closures at this section. All work is due to be completed by December 2012.

Do they know something we don't?

Obviously you missed the announcement that Lyneham is to become the tri-service technical training HQ.
