S. Korean military declares emergency alert after Kim Jong-il's death (http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2011/12/19/54/0301000000AEN20111219005800315F.HTML)

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Monday placed all military units on emergency alert following the news of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's death.

The JCS said it called an emergency meeting of officials handling crisis management and operations just after noon Monday, after the North Korean media reported Kim's death. The JCS said it has increased its monitoring activities along the border along with the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command. No unusual activity had been observed from the North, officials said.

Officials said they may raise the "Defcon," a five-stage combat alert level, from its current level of four to three, and may also increase the Watchcon, an anti-North Korea surveillance alert, from three to two. Watchcon two signifies a state of emergency with indications of a vital threat from North Korea.

The South last raised its Watchcon to two immediately after the North shelled Yeonpyeong Island, just south of the Yellow Sea border on Nov. 23, killing two marines and two civilians.

"We're keeping close tabs on the demilitarized zone (DMZ), Joint Security Area (JSA) and Northern Limit Line (NLL) for possibilities of North Korean provocations," one JCS official said, referring to volatile border areas on land and in sea.

According to the JCS, the Master Control and Report Center (MCRC) at Osan Air Base, south of Seoul, which handles aerial monitoring and analysis, plans to ask for reinforcement by both South Korean and U.S. forces.

Army Gen. Jung Seung-jo, chairman of the JCS, is on his way back to Seoul from a field trip to frontline units, officials said.

Jamesdevice,

You are so wrong there. You obviously don't speak Korean and you've just believed the translation given on the screen. What he was actually saying was that (sorry, my Korean isn't perfect, I learnt it from the menu at our local cat restaurant):

Once our glorious country is risen up and smashed the capitalist stir-fry inhabiting the land to the south of our special fried rice, we shall boil our missiles to show the World the wonder of our nuclear mung bean starch jelly, which will explode over their kimchi rice dish. Then we's shall crushing the Americans by forced the Moonpie to crash into their weevil-ridden ganjang. Then we will join with our yeonn ppuri in China and Russia to rule the World and grill our nureongi in great triumphs.

It is quite feasible that the seagulls in question took refuge in the open refrigerator, having been chased into the kitchen by a large canine which then attracted the attention of the Korean chef, who proceeded to pursue said mutt around the kitchen with a meat cleaver, the better to get it on the menu as the Plat du Jour.

Obvious, really.......

No more cats and dogs left to eat, that's why the population have resorted to eating grass seeds, if they haven't died already.

First signs of the new regime getting serious? Or just sabre waving?

"Just a day after concluding talks in Beijing with an American envoy, North Korea is airing bellicose rhetoric about upcoming U.S.-South Korean joint war games.

North Korea is vowing a "sacred war" in response to annual joint military exercises South Korean and U.S. forces are to begin staging Monday.

The announcer, reading a statement of the National Defense Commission, says the joint maneuvers by the United States and South Korea, are, in essence, a “silent declaration of war” and will prompt a “corresponding physical retaliation” by the North."
