GASCo Safety Seminars and GASCo/CAA Safety Evenings

I thought that posting the details of our Safety Seminars and Safety Evenings on PPrune might be a good way of spreading the word and very many thanks to PPrune Admin for agreeing to my request so readily and enthusiastically.

Our next safety seminar on Human Factors will be held on 13th December 2011 at Oxford Aviation Academy. The day will include presentations by Dr Matt Ebbatson of Cranfield University on Decision Making; Nigel Breyley on Personal Risk Asssessment; Nikki Heath of Symbiotics Ltd on Personal Skill Development and Michael Benson of GASCo on Personality Drivers. GASCo/CAA Safety Evenings restart in January and we'll be publishing the full programme of about twenty more evenings throughout the UK in the next few weeks. I'll post the details on the forum when available but, in the meantime, I have put details of two events that are already in the plan below.

Thanks 007. I discussed the possibility of holding an evening at Rochester with the Airfield Manager last Thursday. He was enthusiastic and I'll now look for a date. There are eleven evenings confirmed between January and March next year with about the same number to come. Details are on the GASCo website and I'll post the details on this thread too.

Thanks for the feedback MarkR - much appreciated. We plan to be in Scotland between 27th and 31st March with one evening confirmed at Aberdeen on Wednesday 28th March. We are hoping to fit in Dundee on Tuesday 27th March because they requested an evening last year but we couldn't accommodate it in the programme. We would like to include three other venues after Aberdeen. As we visited Inverness this year, we are looking for other locations at the moment and would like to come back to see everyone there in 2013. If you have any suggestions for this year, they would be most welcome.

Thanks for your response. As a relatively fresh pilot aspiring to go commercial and based on my personal experiences to date I think that for the average PPL the subject of continued VFR into IMC is of great interest.

In Scotland with the terrain and distinct lack of alternates at times, I feel that a good appreciation of weather phenomena and keeping an escape route open at all times is vital. I consider myself lucky to have learnt this through both experience and through some of the excellent and timely IMC tution that I have received.

Particularly with the IMC rating being axed and with some unknowns as to what is going to replace it, I think that now is a good time to re-iterate some facts and invite some discussion with regards to this subject area.

Even the best of us can get caught out by weather at times, and as the average PPL gathers hours he/she is obviously going to venture a little further from their home airfield and push the boat out a little more pushing closer and closer to their personal limits or that of the aircraft. Then along comes something unexpected and suddenly we want to be on the ground (but cant be immediately). Most of us have been there at some point I'm sure

Anyway enough waffling..... essentially a bit more on weather risk assessing/contingency planning would be excellent. I have actually decided to attend the met office courses on aviation meteorology and weather decision making in March to see what they are all about. Although unfortunately unlike GASCo's efforts the met office's courses are not free and hence the take-up is quite low it would appear.
