As a fixed wing driver I was amazed by the size of this monster and even more amazed that it was 1950's technology. How does it compare to todays large helicopters, can anything carry the same load?

I managed to get one hour at the controls of this mighty beast at a place called Naryan Mar in Arkengelsk province northern Russia. I sat on the right (co-pilot's seat in a Russian built helicopter) and we did 3 or four circuits and some hovering. It's a bit like flying a supertanker. It is bad enough being confronted with altitude in metres and speed in k.p.h but the AH system was bonkers. Just as well we did not indulge in IFR or I would have found the little moving aeroplane on a stick just a bit much. It's built like a tank and you can dig it out of a snowdrift and fire it up without much difficulty and the blade de-icing works a treat I'm told, powered by an APU in the cabin with a bloody-great generator attached to it.

Good fun.
