Currently doing an assignment which requires me to look at aerodynamic advances in a 787. I have found that the Boeing website is not very detailed when it comes to the new concepts (They dont want ideas copied etc..). They have included smaller fairings, laminar flow nacellle, flaperons, sweptback wings, raked wing tips. I have also read that they are using a new paint type that also helps with the airflow to reduce drag on nacelles and using HLFC in the tail. :ugh:
Basically what I am asking is does anyboy have any more information or facts that would be useful ? Thank you in advance :ok:

In my own poor Rigger's opinion, the most aerodynamic change made on the 787 that I can see is the CFR manufacturing system which makes smoother outside surfaces that, in turn helps smoother airflows.

Oh yes...and the nice crinkley bits on the rear of the engine nacelles - to mix hot & cold gasses to reduce noise, apparently.

Hope this helps.

Were you at this link? At newairplane.com (http://www.newairplane.com/787/design_highlights/#/VisionaryDesign/Aerodynamics/SmoothWingTechnology)

Also this link (http://www.designnews.com/document.asp?doc_id=222448) reiterates that any savings/advances are not just through use of composites, but by integrating a number of new advances to enhance efficiency overall. However, there's a good point about the ability to acheive more complex (and efficient) wing shape with the new materials.

This Flight global blog has some interesting references regarding the aircraft performance, including reference to a dossier compiled by Airbus about the aircraft.
At long last, a new comment system for FlightBlogger - FlightBlogger - Aviation News, Commentary and Analysis (http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2011/10/excess-weight-keeps-anas-early.html)
The prototype was 9500kg overweight!
The Airbus document can be found here:

You probably will find that a lot of the 'new' technologies Boeing are marketing with the 787 are not a new concept.

Im sure if you googled many of the design features you will see them on older now out of service aircraft.

Some are a bit before my time but I do remember learning the basic systems in my LWTR studies. I am sure there are plenty of members who can help by posting examples and applications??

230v AC systems?? Not many aircraft have IDGs rated to that.. Not many at all!:E

Interesting on tubby's link to the Airbus presentation, slides within had "Boeing Propriety" clearly marked on them. :hmm:

Often people come up with really clever ideas that just aren't practical at the time. Years later technology has improved and that concept become workable. Happens all the time.
