It seems that Aeromur - the licence holders for Murcia's new Corvera airport - have offered AENA 20% ownership of the airport in compensation for San Javier closing > Aeromur offers AENA 20pct of Corvera airport (http://www.tumbit.com/news/articles/3832-aeromur-offers-aena-20pct-of-corvera-airport.html)

A few days ago, I read an opinion article reflecting the real situation of Corvera Airport:

5th-October-2011

We have an airport that is owned by a private company (Aeromur = Sacyr + Caja Murcia + CAM...), but asking to be exploited by the state (AENA) "because he has the experience to do", which also has support by the regional administration, because it has the means to do it (the regional government of Murcia with a guarantee of 200 million euros) and just give to a private company (Aeromur) clients of a public airport, close, cheap and not subsidized (Murcia San Javier). If this is not state aid and market distortion, someone explain.

So far, it sounds a government rescue and waste, remaining the question about who pays, if the citizens of Murcia or all Spanish citizens.

6th October 2011

Aena has confirmed that March 2012 is impossible for the new airport to be operational, contrary to what is said from the regional government. Aena explains that the earliest would be in October 2012 due to important changes which must be made in the Air Navigation Plans of San Javier, Alcantarilla, El Altet and Corvera.

This is typical Spanish stupidity with everyone jumping on the Regional Airport bandwagon. There are three airports at Murcia - how daft is that! Meanwhile Castellon has a lovely new Regional Airport - built with corrupt finance - but it can't be opened. Still, it will shortly have a brand-new huge bronze statue of a figure that bears a remarkable likeness to Carlos Fabra - the now defunct head of the Provincial government who managed to get this totally useless airport built. It's all a bit reminiscent of the UK railway mania of the 1850's.

With just enough Spanish to understand the press articles, it would appear that the chances of the commercial survival of Corvera (Murcia) Airport is very much in doubt.

Closing San javier (Murcia) airport that has served perfectly well and at a very economical price, since it is the cheapest airport in Spain, will most probably discourage most airlines to operate in the Murcian Region.

Already passenger numbers last year fell from 2 million in 2007 to 1,300,000 in 2010. Numbers for 2011 probably won't make the 1 million mark.

Incidently, as the La Verdad newspaper points out, the amount of guarantees to underwrite the loans and debts of the new Corvera Airport private company, that have been issued by the Murcian Regional Governement is 270 million euros.

If the private company owning Corvera (Murcia) airport goes belly up, which most likely it will, the Murcian taxpayers will have to foot the bill and there will be much more than 270 million Euros to find. This at a time when the Regional Murcian Government cannot pay its bills and owes even its Social Security pharmaceutical bills to the Murcian chemists, which is bringing these to the brink of bankruptcy.

Amazing what politicians can do with money when its not theirs and they
don't want to lose face..........

Will the new Paramount World theme park when it opens in 4 years time create a massive influx of tourists?

The theme park might be an attraction, but as yet the funding is not in place. The press presentation last week was purely to attract investment, not to confirm that the project is actually going ahead.
I personally see the proposed opening date as very optimistic, and doubt that Corvera could remain open for the 4/5/6 years before the theme park finally opens. Also by then the high speed rail-line will be open, so many French/Belgians etc may prefer to let the train take the strain!

What are the chances that Corvera will end up like:

Jet2.com Visit The New Regional Murcia International Airport | Jet2.com (http://www.jet2.com/News/Jet2_com_Visit_The_New_Regional_Murcia_International_Airport/)

Senior members of staff from the North's leading leisure airline, Jet2.com, met with the Murcia regional Government and visited the brand new Regional Murcia International Airport – situated approximately 19 kilometres from Murcia City and 28 kilometres from the Costa Calida coast.

Jet2.com is keen to ensure a continuity of flights to the region for its customers when San Javier Airport is expected to close its doors to passenger operations in 2012. Jet2.com urged the regional Government and the new airport team to ensure minimum passenger disruption by delaying the airport switchover until after the summer season, in November – thus enabling customers to make their travel plans for next year.

The airline has expanded its services to San Javier since 2004, to provide its loyal customers, including many homeowners in the region, the best possible service from 7 UK airports. The Murcia flights complement Jet2.com's popular Alicante flights, which the airline operates frequently from each of its 8 UK bases.

In addition the company has developed its Jet2holidays offering to the region - which is leading the way in offering inclusive holiday packages to the Costa Calida.

In order to continue to provide the best possible customer service, Jet2.com's 50 plus staff at San Javier will be transferred to the new airport when it opens next year, to ensure the same seamless, friendly service passengers have come to expect.

The regional government officials have promised to provide the best possible facilities so passengers can still enjoy a very fast transit through the new airport, so they can fully maximise their time in the sunshine. During the visit Jet2.com was also shown the new car hire facilities and brand new road links to the A30 motorway network, providing a swift transfer to the key holiday resorts in the region.

Ian Doubtfire, Managing Director of Jet2.com, commented: "We are very impressed with the user friendly airport facilities that have been built in Corvera and think it will be a very efficient airport when operational. The regional government has promised to keep us updated on the continuing discussions with AENA and have ensured that there are no disruptions to any of Jet2.com's scheduled flights to this important region - meaning passengers can look forward to their holiday.

"In the meantime we anticipate our full operation to continue at San Javier and will ensure that there is a seamless transfer at the end of 2012."

Quote from the Torygraph article:
But of the 48 regional commercial airports built in the debt-ridden country in less than 20 years, only 11 make a profit.

48 regional airports built in the last 20 years??

What if we could build a new runway at LHR for just €130m? A different perspective on costs, even if usage is zero!

An agreement was signed on 16th November to transfer all commercial flights from San Javier to Corvera. Although no formal date was announced the transfer is expected to be sometime during 2012.
