Just watched Sky news interview a Flight Lieutenant at Fylingdales. He appeared to be wearing some metal wings above his left shirt pocket. Is this some new official brevet?

RAF Fylingdales is manned by the RAF but mostly owned by the USAF and from my time there in the 1990s some of the RAF Officers sported USAF Radar Officers or sensor Opertors wings. Think it is a local thing to cheer the Radar folks up.

link to piccys of USAF Wings and things so you may see the wings you spotted.

They even have Stackers Wings (Supply and Fuels)

US aircrew wings used to be made of silver (marked 'sterling). During WW2 they were also made in England by J.R.Gaunt & Son of London and hallmarked on the reverse. Any of those you can get your mitts on are very collectable. I know some of our guys used to get hold of USAF wings on trips to Offutt, etc, but I never had the foresight to do it myself :(

It is well known that Air Force wings are made of lead, whereas Navy wings are made of gold.

Back to the original post - what sort of 'wings' was the Flt Lt wearing, and more importantly, why?

Some of my old trade group in the RAF used to wear US Navy awarded badges at JMF Brawdy. If you earned it and it was officially sanctioned then you are entitled to wear it.

Apparently they're called 'Spings', as in spacewings.
I believe that the uniform policy bods have recently canned the suggestion of the suggestion of aircrew wearing metal wings/brevets on blue shirts- so it's good to see non-aircrew getting away with it! Same sort of sh1te as Air rank Os wearing US stars!

Surely you're only entitled to wear "space wings" if you have been/go into "space"....!??

wearing metal wings/brevets on blue shirts

It was hard enough to get this one through - MoD Approved Pattern Jacket (http://www.flying-jacket.com/product-details.aspx?id=20) Leather jackets with blues.

The option for wings on CS95 decision was also taken at the same time in 2010 - a no cost option. But wings were going to cost a fortune for blues and the flimsy shirts not up for the job.

Latest I heard was a name badge (with rank) with a RAF logo for non-aircrew and a flying badge for those that have qualified. But that was 10 months ago and things are a bit more fiscally challenged these days!

Vigilant I'm sure the service aviators receive around stn is more to do with how some people conduct themselves and not to do with whether or not you're wearing wings.

B word, I read the same dits but I'm sure it said the badges would be brought in as an initial issue at ph1 try- not many aircrews earn't their wings by that stage, no doubt an ill thought out policy that has seen thousands of badges bought and paid for sitting in a factory somewhere waiting for names that will never arrive! nonetheless, like you I haven't seen anybody wearing a new badge yet..... Or a WO wearing a leather jacket with blues??

Must admit I find the service I get from PSF/stores/etc when in a flying suit (I sometimes don't even have time to polish my boots) is generally very very good. It's either my station, or the fact that I just try to be very nice to everyone.
