Hi there

We have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7 that worked fine until a few days ago. However now selection of 'start' followed by 'shutdown' (or any of the associated logoff switch user etc.) has no effect at all.

Pushing the power button used to put the machine into hibernate now it makes the screen go blank but pushing it again reverts to where it was before with no need to enter password.

Any ideas?

Try pushing the power button and holding it until you get a forced shutdown. Then restart. If that doesn't work I guess there is a reset button underneath the machine somewhere.

Have a look at Power Options ( <Start> <Control Panel> <Power Options> ) Has something been messing with the settings?

We don't think settings have been played with (not by us anyway) but checked power options and help.Seemed all OK but showed us the shut down button is sometimes joined by a an exclamation in a yellow shield to warn that shut down button if pushed will install update then shut down.

We tried the forced shut down.

Guys

On next start then normal shut down was available. Thankyou both.
