Rumours on the 'Freight Dogs' forum point to Lockheed bringing out an AD on wing fatigue that even the RAF may have trouble swerving around...

Wouldn't be surprised, some of those frames must be pushing 40 years old - and I knew what I felt like then . . .

I also wonder about the wing extensions on the -500 40 years on too . . .

(yes I do know about ACS).

I understand that the AD will cover all the TriStar airframes, from the first to the last. This may help out the RAF's spares situation, as no civil operator will be able to run the aircraft economically...

Kitsune, Lockheed can not issue an AD only a National Airworthiness Authority (NAA) can issue such. What Lockheed may do is issue a service bulletin(SB) and the FAA (as state of design) may then further mandate the SB to make it an AD, TBH being involved with the MAOS and Mil 145 implementation and the Haddon Cave report it would be difficult for the RAF/MoD to sidestep any such directive if issued.

All correct, but tell me the chances of the FAA and EASA not making a Lockheed fatigue SB an AD...

Really don't know Mate, many SBs from many manufacturers are not mandated Boeing been the main one I can think of, I also worked at Airbus and Fokker very few make it to AD level, remember if the relevent NAA do mandate it, it is deemed to be a safety factor and compliance times issued accordingley, if you are implying that just because Lockheed issue a SB the FAA will immediately mandate it is simply not true.

well, this one has:

Federal Register | Airworthiness Directives; Lockheed Martin Corporation/Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Model L-1011 Series Airplanes (http://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2011/08/08/2011-19968/airworthiness-directives-lockheed-martin-corporationlockheed-martin-aeronautics-company-model-l-1011)

Multi source on tinters indicates Lockheed called an Online Operators conference in July to discuss wing fatigue back in July....

From the above:

New Requirements of this AD: New Revision Back to Top (http://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2011/08/08/2011-19968/airworthiness-directives-lockheed-martin-corporationlockheed-martin-aeronautics-company-model-l-1011#table_of_contents)

(h) For all airplanes: Within 12 months after the effective date of this AD, incorporate a revision into the maintenance inspection program which provides for inspection(s) of the SSDs defined in Lockheed Document Number LG92ER0060, “L-1011-385 Series Supplemental Inspection Document,” revised April 2009. Doing this revision terminates the requirement to revise the maintenance inspection program as specified in paragraph (g) of this AD.Show citation box

(i) For all airplanes: Do all applicable inspections specified in Lockheed Document Number LG92ER0060, “L-1011-385 Series Supplemental Inspection Document,” revised April 2009. The non-destructive inspection techniques referenced in Lockheed Document Number LG92ER0060, “L-1011-385 Series Supplemental Inspection Document,” revised April 2009, provide acceptable methods for accomplishing the inspections required by this AD. Doing the inspections required by this paragraph of this AD terminates the corresponding inspection requirements of paragraph (g) of this AD

VR i did not say none did and incidently this one has not as it is still in the NPRM stage, alas it is not a new but amendment to an existing AD that was issued in 1995.

That report has been out several years. Is there anything to suggest that the RAF doesn't already carry out the inspections called up?

Sorry chaps, my sums aren't all they were, thanks Fergi.
