From The Telegraph 05 Dec 2009 (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6734115/David-Cameron-pledges-to-double-bonus-for-soldiers-returning-from-Afghanistan.html):

"The Tory leader said the payment for a six-month tour of duty would increase to £4,800 if the Conservatives won the next general election. He also revealed plans to appoint a national security adviser, make service personnel working at the Ministry of Defence wear uniforms instead of civilian clothing and award campaign medals to RAF medics who are currently not eligible for them."

The Tory Party did not win the last Election. They are in a Coalition with the Liberal Democrats who made no such pledge.

One should also remember the words of the outgoing Secretary to the Treasury - "I'm sorry but there is no money".

Op allowance is currently something like £29 a day, so he's more than made good on the first promise. 182 days gets you over £5000 now.

a_a,

I'm not quite sure what the point of this thread?

If the "promises" were kept - well done.

If the "promises" weren't kept - it is no more or less than we have come to expect from politicians of all parties, and is hardly news!
