This morning a C-130 of the Royal Air Force crashed in the mountainous terrain surrounding the city of Guelmim in south-west Morocco. 78 souls on board died, 3 survived so far. No further details available at the moment.
The aircraft was enroute from Dakhla to Guelmim (GLN). (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1274&bih=779&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=guelmim+airport&fb=1&hq=airport&hnear=0xdb5033cfb6695ff:0x28b51c9a3fb61aea,Guelmim,+Morocco&cid=12061222322684684976)

The airport is military operated with a VOR 1.1 NM south west of the airport aligned with RWY 05

None of the above

Gentlemen, I wouldn't normally poke my nose in here, but this would appear to be an aircraft of the Moroccan Air Force, not the RAF as has been stated above.

Presently being discussed in the Military Forum. (http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/458537-mroccoan-air-force-c-130-crash.html)

Yes None of the above it is from the Royal Air Force....of Morocco! There are more Royal Air Forces around in this world... Quite so, but open to misinterpretation, all the same.

Au contraire!

The 'Royal Air Force' is so named to acknowledge the fact that it was the World's FIRST 'Air Force'.

From wikipedia:
The RAF is the world's oldest independent air force: that is, the first air force to become independent of army or navy control.[3] It was founded on 1 April 1918
Obviously at that time there was no need to call it the "British' Air Force (as some of our colonial cousins like to refer to it) as nobody else had thought of one yet!

So all others are named in such a way as to avoid the confusion we have seen here.

Simples! :ok:

Deepest condolences to all the families of those involved.

Sorry, I should have said CN--235.
Agree the reg is a C-130 and that's what you see in the BBC video.
But have a closer look at the tail, that might be a C-130 but then again might be a CN-235, it's not unknown for serials in this part of the world to travel across types.

It's only because the (C-130) rudder is completely gone that it make it look like it.
