A senior Army chief has warned of a fresh wave of redundancies that will wipe out entire battalions and regiments, a leaked letter to commanding officers has revealed. Gen Peter Wall, Chief of the General Staff (CGS), said an additional 5,000 soldiers will be made redundant on top of the 7,000 the Government has already announced.

That will lead to an "inevitable" new redundancy programme and the "disbanding" of battalions, he revealed in a letter seen by the Daily Telegraph.

Gen Wall said he regretted the "sobering" impact it would have on troops and their families. He wrote: "Regular Army manpower will be cut more steeply with an additional reduction of 5,000 over and above the 7,000 already in progress as a result of the SDSR. "This takes the Army to around 90,000 by 2015. The additional manpower cuts are now being scoped but will inevitably require a further redundancy programme.

"Although detailed planning is not yet complete we must assume that these reductions will require the further removal of formed battalions and further regiments from the force structure, including the combat arm."
This comes after Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced last week he was ploughing resources into the Territorial Army so more "properly trained and equipped" reservists soldiers were ready for frontline duties. In turn, the Army would be cut to 82,000 by 2020.

The Ministry of Defence insists no-one about to embark on a tour of duty in Afghanistan would be made redundant unless they put themselves forward.

A spokesman said: "The Defence Secretary has agreed with CGS that we will move gradually towards the new Army structure so operations are not adversely affected by additional reductions in regular Army numbers, which will be made as we drawdown our commitments in Afghanistan in 2014/15.

"No-one who is preparing for or is deployed on operations will be made redundant unless they volunteer. Only those who have returned from operations and have taken all their operational leave will be considered."

Reckon that when the Afghan plug is finally pulled we will no longer have an 'Army' in an academic sense. UK Defence Plc within the forseeable future I reckon and the days of traditions (regardless of what colour uniform you wear) such as individual Messing must be numbered.

You know the "interesting" (and I use that term advisedly) about all this?

Theres lots of decisions being made, or appearing to be made about what pain, what reductions, etc are being made, but is there any attempt to say "well, this is why we're going down this particular road, this is where we're going to be in the end, this is the grand plan, the end destination"?

Cuz if there is, I think I must have missed it... I used to think that keeping significant elements of the populace in fear for their livelihoods/safety etc was the preserve of the Bacofoil hat brigade, but... nowadays.... maybe theres something in it.

After all, if its part of a bigger plan, surely it would be in both their interests and ours for us all to see it, decide what we think of it and, if we so decide, get behind it.... or vote against it, if that be the case.

Too simplistic by half, I know... :(

s there any attempt to say "well, this is why we're going down this particular road, this is where we're going to be in the end, this is the grand plan, the end destination"?

that's easy to work out:

All potential enemies will be given a phone number to call before declaring war against us........................... when they ring the number they get a recorded message that says "we surrender".

Only those who have returned from operations and have taken all their operational leave will be considered.

Keep 1 day of PODL on your leave record. Simples.

About time someone started mentioning cuts to a couple of institutions in London, i.e. House of Commons, and House of Lords.

B:mad:ers would soon start kicking off about that.

Plus this idea to cut regular forces and replace with TA. How many civvy bosses are going to be willing to let staff disappear for 9 to 12 month tours.

I realise they arent that at the moment, but when the next crisis happens and we play 'World Police' they soon will be :ugh::ugh:
