View Full Version : Aircraft vacating runway and right of way

Hey Ppruners,

The scenario is, you're taxiing along a taxiway and to your left an aircraft is vacating the runway and converging toward you. Who has right of way?

Traditionlly aircraft that are to your right, must give way. Except for traffic vacating the runway.

My two questions are:

1. Where are the regs that state that taxiing aircraft must give way to aircraft vacating a runway? I've looked every where, even google.
2. Does this apply for only Class D airspace aerodromes or all aerodromes?

Don't arrivals have right of way over departures ?, then I guess it would go something like Medical / SAR, RPT, Military, Charter, Air work, Private.

I thought there used to be a list like that in the orders or reg's some where.

Dunno, thats my two cents worth anyway.

Mate i reckon you have totally lost it here ,Its pretty simple , use your common sense as there is nothing in the book to say as what to do except for aircraft who has already landed must vacate asap.

I also see and hear a lot of guys some very experienced guys over the radio asking the aircraft that has already landed and backtracking as the other aircraft wants to enter the runway.Althought the regs doesnt say anywhere that one have to ask /request from the aircraft backtracking whether or not he/she can enter the runway, it is a good airmanship to ask.
stop reading too much into it mate and just do the right thing.
also what do u do when you see someone jaywalking in the middle of the road while you are driving at 60 km/hr, do you stop or run over them??????

I don't know if you are talking about BK or not, but if you are, It is in

ERSA > Local Traffic Regulations > 3. Taxiing ACFT shall give way to ACFT vacating a RWY:ugh:

Besides ITS JUST COMMON SENSE, COURTESY, SAFETY = AIRMANSHIP!

Thanks Superstinker, I knew I saw that reference from somewhere :)

Its also in a publication from CASA for Class D airspace.

I recently had a situation where I was on descent to a local CTAF that is served by 3 RPT operators. I was going to be first into the circuit followed by an arriving Saab. The Saab and I had worked out we were using the rwy to the west, I was on base when another RPT called taxiing. I called base, the SAAB called 5nm Final, the other RPT jet taxied right to the holding point of the only taxiway. As I was rolling out he asked me my intentions ? ? I advised that as he was blocking the whole taxiway I was unable to exit and with the Saab rapidly approaching to land he too was stuffed because I was on the runway. The Jet then told me he was unable to enter to backtrack because the Saab was on approach. WTF?? The Saab ended up going around from 400' and rejoining for a downwind on the opposite direction runway whilst the jet entered and backtracked and finally I was able to exit. Quite obviously a complete lack of situational awarness by the Jet captain and he tried to make it out it was my problem ? ?

If you were aware of what was about to happen, could you have gone around and allowed the SAAB behind you to land first. Or were you an RPT operation also.

Sounds like two out of three were doing their best to coordinate traffic flow. :ok:

Where possible I, and I would expect most other PVT, would try and facilitate ARR/DEP for a regional RPT.

For me, cooperating with other aircraft either on the ground or airborne would NOT include doing a go-around after BASE unless it was MED priority.

20 bux the jet wasn't actually listening and understanding what was happenning as they were going through the checklist.

Or..... they couldn't give a crap
