Interesting video from the BBC website showing how much of an impact an F-16 canopy can take.

BBC - Newsbeat - Formula 1 engineers test fighter jet canopy (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/14199629)

It would appear that most F1 drivers have already said a resounding NO to this idea.

There's a rule in F1 stating all drivers must be able to exist their cockpit in either 6 or 8 seconds [can't remember which], so unless they're also talking to MartinBaker it's a no-go.

Wouldn't a canopy turn an F1 car into a single seat sports car?

As the wheel tether system, that is supposed to prevent wheels turning into 200mph missiles, seems to have failed to stop the problem, maybe encasing the driver in a canopy is the next step?...

Im a fully paid up F1 freak. Trust me this is not going to happen, the drivers have already said no. There is also a host of reasons not to "enclose" the driver according to present day F1 engineers, such as you would need air con, (Its VERY warm in a F1 cockpit) There also concerned that if u get a KERS failure or leak, fumes could find there way into the cockpit.

This idea is nearly as barking as Bernie's one to have sprinkler systems installed in Dubai to create a "wet" race. If I want to see a wet race I will go to Silverstone!!

Well, at least any F-16 pilots flying near a F1 race will be safe in the knowledge should a wheel decide to head-butt them, they'll be fine...

The reason that such devices are being looked at is of course, the incident that happened to Felipe Massa in 2009 and the smooth shave Schumacher had at Abu Duabi last year when another car rode up the nose of his merc and came close to decapitating him.. I agree an enclosed canopy is a no,no, but a windscreen isn't such a mad idea.

What does worry me is why this thread was raised in Military Aircrew.. cos it has nothing to do with aviation, even flight testing.. Expect thread to be closed very shortly..:E

But it's an F16 bit of glass.......

No its not glass.. Thats why you were a fairy or a JAFAD..:E

Its not even a canopy, its the plexiglass bit that fits in one.. and isn't fitted to an airframe..

Not plexiglass. Polycarbonate (AKA Lexan)

After an excellent landing etc...
