Anyone who was at the College of Air Training, Hamble, in the 60's will remember Captain John Vickers. He didn't suffer fools, and likened his treatment of under-performing students to the pruning of dead wood in his rose garden. However, he was a brilliant instructor, and, although I didn't think so at the time, I'm grateful that his high standards stood me in good stead for the next forty years. He flew Sunderlands in the RAF and was a QFI, before he became an instructor at Hamble.

Sadly, Captain Vickers died last Saturday. His funeral is on the 3rd August at;

All Saints Church
Manor Street
Ruskington
Sleaford
NG34 9EL

Would this be the same John Vickers who flew for McAlpine's at Luton during the mid to late 1970s on the Hs125s?
If it is, I remember him as a, fairly short white haired chap, very experienced indeed, with a firm but quiet respectful personality & an absolute pleasure to fly fly with.

God Bless

Yes, I believe that he went to McAlpine after he left Hamble. Fully agree with your description. Captain Vickers' name appears 30 times in my logbook. I will be at Ruskington on Wednesday.
