Or really good supermarkets who specialise in 'em. Any advice welcome.

PS

Heinz, or other manufacturers.

Branston. End of story. Heinz are, in my opinion, the F3 of beans; not very good and a tad passe.

Why the need for a recommendation - or we again going to be treated to a TV shot of baby pilots eating them from the tin

I'lll get my coat

PS Wife's ex husband, on request, brought some UK baked beans out to us in France - cheeky sod brought " low fat, low sugar" (ie no flavour beans!)

Branston. Plus, they're on offer at Sainsbury's - 99p/4

When I went through Cranwell I was told that baked beans weren't an officers vegetable......

Mind you, strictly speaking baked beans are legumes....!!

We were also still being told at Cranwell at that time to buy a trilby, for "town wear".....

the cheapest you can get, as long as you spice them with Marmite and Cayenne pepper

and its best to fry them in bacon fat rather than simply heat them in a saucepan

They told me many things at Cranners, almost none of which I can recall.

It's got to be Branston. Plenty of beans in a good tomato sauce :ok:

And usually on offer!

Oh dear, Biggus! I thought that it was fairly apparent that my tongue was firmly in my cheek - I certainly meant no offence .....:D Curiously enough, you've just reminded me of the raised eyebrows in a naval mess when an RAF officer started eating potato crisps out of a packet rather than those in the silver salver on the bar.

Incidentally, it would be considered unthinkable for a "submarine breakfast" not to include baked beans!

Which was rather hypocritical considering they were served at Breakfast in CHOM.

That was a test - didn't you spot the Cdt Wg spies taking notes?

Normally the oiks would have been spotted and weeded out long before they crossed the road to College Hall, but standards dropped when Henlow closed and RAFC went comprehensive...:uhoh:

I hope no-one is taking this seriously?

MODBeans are produced in the United States as this reduces production costs by 30%, and then they are shipped to the UK and opened, after which the sauce is drained and replaced with a British specification sauce. They are then shipped back to the US for repackaging, after which they are delivered to the consumer in the UK.

The consumer may notice fewer beans per can than other brands, this is due to the need to cover traansport costs.

Hope this helps.

You obviously took something in even if you missed the lesson on apostrophes.

Now I am surprised that BEagle didn't mention why beans are not an officers' vegetable, or rather why aircrew should not eat beans before flight.

BEagle
2nd Jul 2011, 20:51
I see no apostrophic abuse in the usage of weren't. It has been an acceptable form of 'were not' since 1691, I understand.

An officers' vegetable, however, is incorrect. Either An Officer's vegetable or Officers' vegetables.

Take first.....

Unless of course, a bunch of chaps all agreed to prepare the land, acquire the seed and grow a single carrot - then surely that would be an officers' vegetable?

I raise you my third rate public skool against your grammar and remind you that I was so good I did Cranners twice!!

Apostrophe-shamostrophe!

What is considered an Officer's vegetable?

Nothing green, obviously, as this is the way Nature warns us of its foul and rancid taste.

Heinz by a mile. Where I live I have to pay 3.5 GBP for 4 small pots of British Heinz beans, a small price to pay for the luxury of a Sunday morning beans on toast.

For me it has to be Morrisons, cheap as chips and just as nice (plus it's a proper Yorkshire supermarket :ok:).

Any grammar or spelling mistakes are attributed to the fact I'm from Yorkshire.

We had MoD beans at Machrihanish once during an exercise. The exercise was a deployment of RNlAF Atlantic for a nudge nudge wink wink, and we were boltholing there.

During their Det there was a daily delivery from Campbeltown with the Baked Bean tanker leading the Tinned Tomato truck and the sausage cart. As soon as their Det was finished we reverted to proper full Jock breakfasts.

One has just enjoyed a breakfast of bacon and Branston 'Bloomin' Big Baked Beans'. Dash of wooster sauce, very yummy. Being a former SNCO I, of course, had no doubts about whether or not, the beans were the right food for one!:ok:

If you HAVE to get baked beans from Tesco (and their own brand is very tasty, well up to Heinz standard IMHO), beware of buying Tesco 4 packs shrink wrapped in plastic.

While appealing due to ease of carriage and an assumption that they are cheaper, BEWARE. Individual tins are cheaper, not the multipack! :ooh:

The realities of a civilian wage :hmm:

Branston (bought out of neccesity one day), I consider too rich. Heinz: superb, but not worth the money, despite it's retro appearance being pleasing to the eye (noted when re-aligning the labels forward during an occasional cupboard tidy).

I contacted Westlers (who make the Compo Sausages). They do supply them direct to sad old giffers like me but currently have none in stock and are waiting for an order from the MOD. I have given them my contact details and will get an e-mail when they are able to ship some out. I plan to buy at least a case of them as a safeguard against the forthcoming Zombie Apocalypse.

The product name (as mentioned above) is Sausages in Lard.

Westlers Product Enquiries number is 0800 027 6336 or +44 (0) 1653 693966.

On the subject of square sausages (consumed behind the sceen in the transit mess at Luqa, for V force only) is there no modern day equivalent?. The sausage of today is all hard pork and very unappetizing. If only Wrestlers could be persuaded to put them on general release.

Or the TV advert according to our cpl in ATC.. (thats the spacies not the ones in air traffic)
We played cowboys and indians my brother and me
caught us a squaw and tied her to a tree
we took off her bra and then took off her jeans
And then we went home for a plate of Heinz Beanz!

We s****ged her too, but it didn't rhyme.

Heinz for me.:ok:
