"Flight on Film" productions

I have a pair of videotapes concerning DeHavilland products, one entitled "Wooden Wonders to Whisper Jets", about the (then) 60 year history of DH, and another all about the DH/BAe 146.

unusually, neither of these videos carries a barcode on the back, simply a logo that reads "a Flight on Film production", so I am presuming they were locally produced affairs and never went on general sale.

Now, having lent my 146 video to a friend he now wants a copy, and someone else on my course came over particularly nostalgic and dewey-eyed when I showed him the 60 years history video.
before I go to the trouble of finding someone with a VCR to DVD convertor and twisting their arm, as well as possibly incurring copyright problems, i want to find out if these videos are actually still available anywhere at all. Googling has thrown up no leads.

Matt, "Wooden wonders to whisper jets", a truely excellent documentary which I've had for at least 20 years now. First thing I did when video to dvd was invented was to transfer things like this to digital. Videotape is barely playable nowadays and every time you stick a videotape into a vcr, you may not get it back in one piece again. Just do it before you regret it, and the copyright thing is a non issue, its your videotape to do as you like.
When I got mine all those moons ago, it was distributed by a company called "DD Video" which specialised in military and aviation documentaries. I don't believe they exist any more. So transfer yours over before you lose it forever. There are other deHavilland videos also. I have one called "A Tigers Tale-The tiger Moth story" which is present by the late Christopher Reeve (Superman actor). There is also a Trident documentary.
And, as you mention deHavilland, you bring back happy memories of flights I had in the deHavilland Heron a few years ago.

Hi All, I know I'm a few years late with this response but I can tell you that as a former director of Flight on Film (together with Jonathan Kent) who produced the films, I can tell you that I am the copyright owner of 'Wooden Wonders to Whisper Jets' and 'BAe146 - Britain's most successful Jet airliner'
I have the master tapes and have considered digitising them and producing new copies for a new audience. Is there any interest out there?

Hi Hatfield, I'm pretty sure that I speak for many on here when I say "Yes Please!" That said, you must bear in mind that we are but a very small part of aviation interests so don't try to market based solely on the numbers of replies you get here.
Keypublishing dot com have a Historic-Aviation forum too and I'd say there would be a wider interest there. I hope that helps.

I've had my copy of 'Wooden Wonders to Whisper Jets' since it was very new on the market (1996 or so) and I can still get dewey-eyed when I watch it - having been at Hatfield for the last 37 of the 60 years involved, and having known a lot of the people that appear on the tape.
Well worth the price I paid, whatever it was!

PS Does "Hatfield125" conceal someone I know?

Sorry, Hatfield 125 is only my user name, I'm Chris Bonass and worked in various BAe photo/film units, initially at Army Weapons, Stevenage then Civil Aircraft at Weybridge and Hatfield.
I'll post details once I've finalised the how and why of digitising the films. Unfortunately, the Tiger Moth video is not one of mine so I can't help with that production.

If you put your details around to various historic aircraft tragics here in Oz you'll find lots of demand. Places like Temora Museum, Historic Aircraft Restoration Society just for starters. There are lots of us.

Well, those took me back. Not so much the Tigers (only have an hour or so on them) but the sight and sound of Alan Bramson. In 1975 I presented myself in a high state of nerves to him at Biggin Hill for my initial Instructor test. He was quite a forbidding presence in those days - Chairman of the Panel of Examiners, umpteen thousand hours experience, author of the standard (at the time) PPL textbooks; not a hint of a smile and no effort made to put me at ease - no wonder I cocked-up the PFL on to Brand's Hatch! Still, I got it at the second attempt. I did several subsequent renewals with him - it didn't get any easier!

Wow, that was a treat; lots of well-known names and I well recall going through that Tiger Club door, squeezing between the tight-knit wings down to the front and asking Michael Jones or whoever was in the office for permission to look at the wonderous types within – always smilingly given! Best hangar in Britain back then...

The mirror aircraft and a few other flying shots are actually Stampes though!

I also recall going through that Tiger Club door, for years in the early '60's (key on a string in the letterbox, you would not do that these days!)
How those aircraft would 'talk' when you were in the hangar with the lights off at night.
Very nice to see my old friends, John Sarrett, Dev and Brian Smith and the others, after all these years.
