I have a friend here who I will be going to visit later in the year and I was wondering if there are any small strips in the area and much GA activity, apart from the airport at Coffs?

There is a private grass strip between Pacific Highway and the Nambucca River, just south of Nambucca township. It looks reasonable (but short) from the air. No GA activity.

That's often referred to as the Hacienda strip as it belongs (or belonged) to the hacienda hotel, probably just as to get to Bellingen from there as from Coffs Harbour. http://www.flightace.com/stop%20press/004881.pdf
As mentioned, there are only little private airfields around the Bellingen area.
