1. Introduction

Following the success of last year’s event the “LANCASHIRE LANDING” BEACH PARTY will take place at Morecambe Bay, Knott End, Lancashire, and at nearby Rossall Field/Tarn Farm on the Saturday the 11th -12th June 2011. The event is a Northern Aviators organised event and will be open to GA, Light Aircraft, Microlights, Autogyros, Paramotors and Powered Hang-Gliders.

2. Aim

The aim of the weekend is to give pilots/passengers the opportunity to enjoy a fun event, land on a beach landing area at Morecambe Bay and to give support to the “Fusilier Aid Society” which is strongly linked to Lancashire. The landing area will be on the Sands in front of Knott End Town and not Pilling Sands which is further north.

3. Concept and General Idea

“On the 25th of April 1915 one of the most gallant actions in the history of the British Army took place at ‘W’ Beach at Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsular. 1000 men of the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers stormed the beach under withering fire from the Turkish defenders. During the course of this action 6 Victoria Crosses were won by the Regiment. The Fusiliers took the beach but at horrendous cost. Of the first 200 men who landed only 21 survived. 600 men of the Battalion were killed or wounded. The beach was later re-named “Lancashire Landing” in honour of the Fusiliers. This action was later referred to the “6 VC’s before breakfast”.

The Fusiliers are still with us today and are now the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. They have an in house charity called the “Fusiliers Aid Society” which helps Fusiliers their widows and dependents financially when they have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. This is particularly relevant in the current climate with our forces deployed on operations overseas.”

To commemorate this action a Fly In on the sands will take place to raise money for the Fusilier Aid Society.

The Bay Flying Club based at Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) are going to provide the logistic support for the event. They will provide key personell to allow the Fly In to take place. Airfield details for Rossall Field can be found on the following website
http://www.thebayflyingclub.co.uk/index.htm (http://www.thebayflyingclub.co.uk/index.htm)

Alternate Weekends

Due to the nature of the landing area we are restricted to certain weekends and days over the weekends where the sands are suitable to land on. As last year if due to weather the event is postponed then we will move to the next available weekend. Pilots are not to try and land outside these time periods as this will be dangerous.

If the weather is bad we have fall-back dates of 23rd-24th July, August the 21st and finally the weekend of 24th-25th September 2011. As always we need to be flexible. We will be in consultation with HM Coastguard so these dates may be tweaked depending on their advice. There will also be an opportunity to land on Middleton Sands within the Heysham Power Station Exclusion Zone but this will be for Microlights (or lighter) only as per CAA agreement.

All we ask is that you make a donation of your choice to the Fusilier Aid Society Charity upon landing at the control point. Mr Sutcliffe (Farmer) has waived the £3 landing fee at Rossall Field/Tarn Farm and has asked that the monies go to this very worthy cause.

The plan is for attending aviators to land on the sands at Knott End, and enjoy a day at the beach. This event will last all day Saturday until late afternoon/early evening until 1900hrs

Aviators will then be invited to take off during the afternoon/evening for the short hop to Rossall Field where the plan is to pitch tents and go to the local pub (Manor Inn) for a meal and further refreshments. The Inn can cater for up to 60 Persons. All attendees who wish to eat at the Cockerham must pre-book their meal on Thursday the 9th of June 2011. You can contact the pub to book your meal on tel 01524791252. (Please check the weather forecast for the Sunday before doing so to avoid unnecessary bookings)

Taxis may be required for transport to the pub and their contact numbers are attached to this letter.

Safety Issues

Pilots returning to Rossall Field on the Saturday afternoon/evening must be confident of landing on what are very short strips i.e. 300 metres therefore large GA type aircraft will not be suited to land in such an area and light aircraft with Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capability should only return to Rossall Field/Tarn Farm.

The strip is of a North –South orientation 02/20. The original north-south strip is undergoing renovation and at present an alternate strip is being used all attendees wishing to recover to Rossall Field in the evening must check the current situation with the state of the strip before the event. We will update websites etc regarding this.

All Pilots should not attempt to land on the beach on Sunday the 12th of June 2011 as the tide will be in. We will only be using the beach/sands on Saturday the 11th of June 2011 in the first instance. If the event is postponed then further clarification will be issued as necessary for future dates.

All attending pilots must not over-fly Knott End in any circumstances, so that relations with the local population are maintained.

An area of the beach will be set aside for aircraft parking and pilots should follow the directions of the Marshalls who will aim to ensure orderly parking of all visiting aircraft. Pilots should take extra care when taxying, parking and later when starting up for departure to ensure that members of the public and other hazards on the beach are at a safe distance at all times.

4. Execution General Outline

As with all aviation events the Fly In is very weather dependant, and, not only this, it is tide dependent as well. In the event of a poor weather forecast then the event will be curtailed to one day. Flexibility will be required by all participants for the fly-in weekend. The aim of this letter is to have all planning factors in place so that minimal further planning is required prior to the Fly In.

The event will be in two phases.

Phase 1 will be the setting up of a temporary beach landing area at Knott End beach area where pilots will be invited to land, have refreshments in the local town and make a charitable donation of their choice to The Fusilier Aid Society.

Phase 2 will be the recovery of all suitable aircraft capable of landing at Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) on the late afternoon early evening of the Saturday where pilots are invited to pitch tents and make their way on foot or by taxi to the nearby village of Cockerham. An evening meal will then be available (to be pre-booked by attendees) at the Manor Inn pub and further refreshments.

The Bay Flying Club will initially set up a beach landing area on Knott End Beach on the morning of 11th June 2011 to allow attending aircraft to land on a safe area without interference to the General Public. The temporary airstrip will be marked out and identifiable to visiting aircraft.

A gate will be laid out into wind whatever the direction and marked by dayglo panels and banners/flags which should be visible from the air. Landing pilots are to land through this gate and into wind. The gate will be approximately 25 metres wide. A temporary Control point will be set up and manned for the duration of the event on the beach. This will provide airfield information via hand held radio to all incoming and outgoing aircraft.

Advance Party
An advance party will depart early morning by vehicle to set up the beach landing area and establish communications and set up a control point with air band radio for communication with incoming aircraft. The advance party will include all event staff including Event Organiser, Radio Operator, Safety Officer, Safety Vehicle, Fuel Run Vehicle, and Marshalls

Main Body
The main body i.e. attending aircraft will arrive once the beach landing area has been established and adhere to instructions for landing given by the control point. No aircraft are to land at the beach landing area prior to the advance party setting up and establishing the temporary strip at Knott End Sands.

5. Coordinating Instructions

Beach Landing Area

The temporary landing area be set up on Knott End Sands at coordinates N53°56.01 W002°59.31 with the orientation roughly East West dependant on wind direction. The beach landing area will have sufficient distance from Knott End in order to negate any disturbance to the local population. The landing area will be marked using dayglo markers and flags or similar. The length will be sufficient for GA types to land without problems.

Pilots will be given a true orientation when calling up on the radio.

Circuits

All circuit to the North of Knott End thus avoiding overfly of built up area.

All Pilots are to avoid flying directly over Knott End and Fleetwood.

Windsock
A temporary windsock is to be set up at the beach landing area location under the direction of the Event Safety Officer.

Feeding

Attendees can find a number of eating establishments in Knott End.

Visiting pilots and crew will need to book taxis to Cockerham once at Rossall Field; no doubt some of the local flyers will be in a position to provide lifts in some cases. Otherwise it is a 3 mile walk to the pub!

Fuel

There will be limited mogas at the temporary beach landing area and no Avgas. Those pilots wishing to refuel should do so at Rossall Field where Mogas runs will be available to local fuels stations. (It may be advisable to call at Rossall first prior to arriving at Sands to avoid the rush)

Those Pilots requiring Avgas will need to have sufficient fuel to get to Blackpool airport, which is the nearest Avgas retailer.

Cockerham Filling Station is Open from 0900hrs-1800hrs Sat –Sun There are further filling Stations in the area but these are further away.

Insurance
All participants are to have a minimum of 3rd party insurance giving at least the minimum coverage required by aviation law. All pilots attending this event are responsible for their own actions and must be not do anything to endanger others. The organisers cannot accept any responsibility for any damage to aircraft attending the event and pilots attending the event must conduct their own risk assessment before coming.

LANCASHIRE LANDING IS ON FOR THIS WEEKEND!
We will sort you out if necessary with Mogas at the beach. There will be some Fusilier veterans at the fly in so please consider FLY A FUSILIER (ie take a vet for a cabby in your aircraft). Local dignitaries will also be attending as well as press.

Rossall Field only has a temporary strip operating at the minute with 250 metres useable so flexies only:=

Mariner, Excellent hope to see you there and it should be a fun event. If you have not landed on Morcambe Bay before, be careful when landing as it is so featureless it is difficult to judge height above the sands

Excellent, the sand is very hard and there is enough room to land the Space Shuttle so let any doubters know.

See you there!
