Delhi mayhem! last night.

Anyone get caught up in the Delhi ATC mayhem around midnight local time 21-22nd. Or 1930Zish. Due to passing cold front and associated CBs.

Over 20 A/C in the hold diversions and low fuel calls going out everywhere.

It completely broke down with A/C stepping all over each other unable to get a word in, led to carriers doing what they wanted and others trying in vain for climbs, descents, vectors around WX. This went on for over 30mins.

ATC reverted to ordering immediate left then right then left orbits to A/C that had no idea who ATC was talking to, it was disgraceful to hear everyone stepping on each other.

Smoc, while that is disgraceful maybe Indian ATC should also look inwards and cut down on the amount of useless duplication in ATC calls they seem to make.
Talking fast does not make you more intelligent than the person receiving the message, it just makes you say it again because they didn't get the transmission meaning in the first place.

I totally agree, but last night the guy was doing the best he could. It was his fellow aviators who let the system down, he had the insight to tell A/C "call sign only" to reduce the chatter, but it fell on deaf ears.

:mad: It is just a plain disASSter flying in India. Why does everybody step on eachother? I heard a yank get real stroppy last week with some " i fly" stepping on everybody. Think it was over HIA.
Why do they issue 3 different clearances, yet what seems more important is that call "through security checks" ...

All good posts -India is a disaster and the pilots are to blame with their complete lack of discipline and constant bullying of those they perceive to be 'lower' than they are . Amazing how they behave when outside of Indian airspace. They are the reason I dropped all ideas of working in India - which is a victory for them I suppose with their anti-expat venom, but at least I will not die of stress wanting to hit someone !

Just last night? It's an everyday occurence in India. I used to fly with Indian captains, who forced me to step on other guys to get a word in. As a captain I chastise all my FO's for butting in between radio calls because of their impatience. Indian drivers do have bit of an issue as far as radio discipline is concerned.
That being said, I've heard EK drivers jumping on others with complete disregard for discipline. And the calls they make OUT OF RANGE from BOM stepping on guys (unknowingly ofcourse) within range drives me up the wall. Is it a case of when in Rome?
I was stuck in the mayhem yesterday and landed 100 kilos above reserve after 50 mins holding and kudos to the ATC guys (they get their fair share of flak) for getting planes in expeditiously once the weather cleared.

I couldn't believe the frankly disgusting R/T practises of some local "pilots" (if that's what they were) when I flew to/over India.

ATC isn't great but most seem to do their best despite ancient equipment, insufficient radar cover (when it's working at all), severely congested frequencies, overworked sectors and staffing shortages. Still hardly an excuse for some of the :mad: coming out of the pilots there.

Worst bit is if you try and do it properly you get washed away in the mess...

If you'd ever flown there, you'd know this is normal every day and every night. Listening to the chaos of idiotic ATC and high-pitched, squeaky voices all speaking as fast as they can without waiting for anyone else to complete their exchange - all emulating life in general in india where if you don't use your elbows to climb all over everyone else, you might not get fed.

ATC who choose when they will and will not respond, if it means the doing some work re. a level change or re-clearance. Etc etc.......

I HATE flying to, from, over or anywhere near that entire area.
