QUOTE

On the evening of Friday 18th January 2002 at 5:00pm Bob Fairall's car was broken into while parked in his company's staff car park in Godstone, Surrey and his flight bag was stolen.

There were a number of items of significant monetary value in the bag, an Icom transceiver, small hand held GPS and a Tron ELB ( LATCC West Drayton and Kinloss have been informed ! ) but, worst of all, the bag also contained his flying licences, ratings, personal log books and the tech logs for Europa G-BXLK and Gazelle helicopter G-GZLE.

It seems possible that those who carried out the theft might try to sell what they consider to be of realisable value, that being the transceiver, etc. Should you hear of such items being sold 'on the cheap' maybe you would let Bob know on 07973 408329 or your local police station quoting crime reference ES/02/705.

Needless to say that while he would very much like to retrieve the items of monetary value, the real focus of his appeal is to recover the important documents mentioned above.

If you have time to pass this appeal on to other 'flying types' he would be most grateful.

END QUOTE.

THANKS AGAIN - BIG BLACK RAT

Thanks to those of you that have e-mailed me at work.

ANY information is worth a look. It is often the 'little things' that people see / hear (that might otherwise get over looked) that provide a positive result in the end !

Iam considering making this and any other crime against aviation a Capital Offence ! ! ! !

Cheers <img src="cool.gif" border="0">

Having just purchased an Icom IC-A2 quite cheaply, I read the thread with interest! Fortunately, the seller of my Icom was able to provide documented proof of ownership going back to 1998.

It did occur to me, as I applied for the Radio License to accompany the Icom, that the CAA form requires the serial number of the unit to be entered and as such the CAA would be about the only place that a stolen transciever could be positively identified when it returned from the 'black economy'.

Perhaps the CAA could maintain a list of stolen serial numbers and at least then the unit could be identified, when someone applied for a license for the unit. It could the be returned to the rightful owner. There would then be an incentive to the purchasers to ensure that the item was actually owned by the person selling it - knowing that the item could be taken off them, if found to be stolen, would certainly concentrate the mind.

On course the idea only works if the new owner is responsible and applies for a license. I don't know how rigorously the licensing scheme for hand-held transceivers is policed, so I can't imagine hwo sucessfuly such a scheme would be.

Anyone know if the CAA has been asked about such an idea?

Don't bother . The CAA won't help, 'cos that not what they're there for.

- I realise my contribution does nothing to help your friend. I sympathise with anyone who has their life messed around with in this fashion; only thing I could do was suggest something that was vaguely possible that might help in the future, if the buracracy that is the CAA felt like supporting GA for once in a while.

I will keep my eyes and ears open, which is all you were asking for. . . . .tacpot.
