From Dark Blue Truth Central (http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/operations-and-support/operations/operations-in-afghanistan/news/royal_navy_squadrons.htm)

"The Sea King Mk 4’s from 845 and 846 Naval Air Squadrons (NAS) have been heavily involved since late 2007 and have made night flying their niche. They are currently conducting more night flying than all the other detachments combined.

...

Commando Helicopter Force Sea King Mk 4 crews operating out of Camp Bastion have carved a niche for themselves amongst SH crews, operating almost exclusively at night" (my italics).

Is this because a) the RN chefs have an over-supply of carrots, b) the light blue need their beauty sleep, c) only the Dark Blue are good enough to fly at night or d) the daytime temperatures are too high for the SK4 to lift more than its own weight and a couple of 24 hour rat packs?

Good luck to them.

Invariably, it will be the RAF's fault somewhere down the line, I'll look out for the letters in the Telegraph.

Coming soon to a website near you on the FAA section of Navy Net. The thread entitled 'CHF - the crabs stiffing us again'.

Read the thread, write to your MP. Hammer huge pieces of crooked wood across the hangar doors at yeovilton. It's all the fault of those nasty crustaceans. They have a man who leads them with a bald head and a fluffy White cat and everything....

Anyone seen my I-pod??

Someone needs to retake their NAMET

Today there are three Naval Air Squadrons....Sea King Mk 4’s from 845 and 846 Naval Air Squadrons (NAS)... Sea King Mk 7 Airborne Surveillance and Control helicopter (SKASaC) from 854 Naval Air Squadron... and the Lynx Mk 9A of 847 Naval Air Squadron is constantly active in the Escort and Surveillance roles.

845+846+847+854 sounds more like 4 Naval Air Squadrons to me

Reads more like a single-airframe det to this c/s. Busy little airframe at that.

I think they mean the T45 bunk spaces come fitted with an in-built Ipod charger Leon.

Dont forget that the navy are better than you at everything. Truly amazing uber-aircrew that can do anything, with less , better.

Any naval aviator will tell you this.

Ps - night flying. Bats and twats. They're welcome to it.

Anyone whose read Sharkey's book will know this to be true.

PS. I put it down after about page 100 and didn't pick it up again. How did it end?

Anyway, when's that SK bagger pilot going to pass his straight and level 1 check at FL nosebleed......? He must be responsible for at least half of RN night stats!

Oh good, for once a pro-RN/FAA thread! Good to see more people are coming round to the dark (blue) side. :ok:

When I had a tour of the new super destroyer HMS Daring I was hugely disappointed not to find a Bose Sound Dock (or Pusser's equivalent) in every bunk space. Apparently the Admiral responsible for the iPod thing was referring to the fact that everyone now has their own plug socket(s). On some previous ships a mess deck for 40ish sailors has had only 2 230v sockets between them, leading to *some* electrical overload when connected to 40x4 gang extension leads.

Leon - love the sailors with RN iPods though, that's classic. Is the moving map on the Chinook any good? How big's the screen? (seriously).
