What is the most difficult situation you have had thrown at you in a simulator?

Have you ever been given a scenario you considered to be unflyable?

Flying Togs,

A severe microburst on short final has defeated at least one training Captain in a 737 sim, not sure which model it was though but from the panel it was at least -300 series.

"Low, slow and nowhere to go!"

EFATO in an ATP with a C of G outside aft limits. Basically unflyable.

Interesting question.. .Have noticed many Johnny-come-latelys to the training environment do, at times, tend to overload those behind the pole with multiple failures. This generally results in total confusion, poor morale, sub-standard performance, and contributes NOTHING to successful training.. .This type of behavior is certainly not cost effective nor desirable. In short, it needs to be eliminated.. .And before you ask...yes I have been involved with training for quite some time.. .Engine and system failures, yes.. .Navigation and FMS failures, absolutely.. .All at once...forget it.

Double engine failure and fire on take-off (at MTOW), both on the same side, combined with a gear retraction failure!

Needless to say, crashed and burned!!

Direct law go-around in an A320 with hydraulic failure, gear stuck down and stab jammed. Won't make that mistake again!!! <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

I was talking about this only a few days ago, one of my friends was put in a situation on the sim which was incredibly wierd where the captain was making the approach when the auto pilot disengaged, bad weather conditions etc, engine failure then he was suddenly told that the captain was to remove himself from the controls while on final in a theoritic position that the captain had a heart or attack or similar so therefore the first officer was to take over immediatly, no completely sure of the details but it with multiple failures the landing was impossible, but he was simply told that it was test, he didnt need to land on the runway, is was to see how he would cope and how he could bring the aircraft as safely as possible. I thought it particularly wierd.

'two engines failed and no gx retract...CG out of limits aft (should not be trying to fly)...whatever else...'.. .those days are over (or should be) and if you are still getting that sort of crap you should ask for an interview with the boss.they can't sack you for that. <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

The most challenging "routine" (on the simulator syllabus) failure I have encountered (so far) was an engine seizure just after initiating a no-contact go-around at DH during a cat III approach on the 737-200.

You were on a fully coupled (2 A/P) approach. "Decide"... nothing, so press TO/GA; A/P pitches up, A/T applies reduced GA power. At this point you have been monitoring the A/P for the last 5mins, so no hands-on 'feel'. After the initial pitch up an engine stops dead. In quite short order you have to:

a) Contain yaw

b) Disconnect A/P

c) Nail correct attitude

d) Disconnect A/T

e) Apply TOGA power to live engine

f) Retract several stages of flap

g) Get the gear up

h) Counter huge out-of-trim forces (in all three axes, especially pitch as A/P has trimmed aft in preparation for the flare)

i) Hope you've done all this quickly enough to avoid a flick roll onto the runway...

First time I had this thrown at me I kept it in the air for about 20s then landed (upside down) on the far threshold <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

Dimitri, I assume that this was towards the end of the sim. check, with all the mandatory items signed up as satisfactory. If that is the case, then they were stretching your friend a little bit to see what he is really made of. If your friend bravely wrestled with it, steely eyed and lantern jawed, all they way to the site of the inevitable accident, then he will have been deemed to have THE RIGHT STUFF!
