Old Oxfordshire airfield

Looking at Google earth there appears to be a disused airfield west of Carterton and just east of the A361 Burford to Lechlade road.

Assuming it was really an airfield (and I'm pretty sure it was) what was it called and when was it in use?

That must be Broadwell. Opened No 1943 closed March 1947. Mainly RAF Dakota squadrons for gliders and airborne troops.

Thanks for that. It must have been a bit busy round there with Broadwell Brize Norton and Fairford practically in sight of each other.

Yes, Broadwell Grange - used to fly R/C models there, 20 plus years ago. Not much left of the original at that time - just some badly broken concrete strips, difficult to tell whether they were taxyways or runways. Not first choice for model flying but 'needs must' etc. Surprised that it hasn't been 'developed' by now.

Broadwell acted as a satellite to the HGCU (Heavy Glider Conversion Unit) at Brize.

It must have been a bit busy round there with Broadwell, Brize Norton, and Fairford practically in sight of each other.Just to the SW of Fairford was Down Ampey, South Cerney and Blakehill Farm. all involved with Glider / Airborne Ops.
