Last flight in `595 was Jan 10 `84,ferry from Lossie to Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood International( aka Finningley). Probably before most of it`s present crew were even `rugrats`...Good to see it still working...If you want the computers sorting ,gimme a call..

The sad thing was that I was sat at home with the SK out of sight, and I knew what it was from the noise. I need help.

To me there's something mesmerisingly gorgeous about a SAR SK - the way they look and sound. Whenever I see one going over, unless it's unsafe to do so, I'll stop what I'm doing and gawp... with a great big silly grin on my face.

Didn't the "Big Windy's" (SK & Chinook) come into RAF service about 78/79?

I seem to remember lots of posters about downdraft - "Big Windy's are comming!" compared to the nice little Whirlwind, that I was used to, and the Wessex.

It was nice to have the opportunity to grab a decent camera and snap it too. We rarely get flypasts of anything these days. I used to watch hawks up off the North end at altitude but even that seems much rarer.

Just realised it was 25 years and 2 months ago that I was posted onto 202 Sqn at Brawdy as a fresh faced Jnr Tech from the 'factory', and 21 years since I was posted on from there!

I'm getting old.....:(

Sycamore......yes the Sik SK first flew in 1958...but that wasn't my point...and indeed in UK terms the RN have been using it for SAR since 1969......apols if it was a bit cryptic....I was referring to the banner now applied under the cabin door celebrating 70 years of RAF SAR as in the pics......given the first RAF SAR SK enterred service (at Culdrose) in '77......I was reflecting on how it hard been in service almost half the overall age of the RAF SAR service....as have I....AHHHH now I do feel ancient:)

202 got their first Sea King in 1978 if I recall correctly :sad: haven't slapped 595 for over 20 years now!! :eek: looks like it needs a good wash though! Used to be a weekly scrub, often with a scramble in the middle just to wash the suds off :ok:. Good to see her still truckin on, probably for a while yet due to our glorious mis-managers!

apparently the winch went tech, leaving someone who should have been upstairs, downstairs. Hence the pickup on the beach.

STANDTO you are absolutely right, we had intended to stay a lot longer to exercise with the lifeboat crew but the hoist failure prevented any further live winching so we had to RTB to get it fixed. Keep you eyes open, we will be back to finish what we started.:ok:

I was the police Div Commander in the north until recently. Unfortunately back on staff at HQ again now. One of my chaps was telling me you were up the river a bit further earlier in the week?

As a frustrated search and rescue pilot who didn't make the grade many years ago, always a pleasure to watch you in action. PM me the next time you are going to exercise and I'll be a bit better prepared!

Hmmm ... did the initial winch trials on the beast at Boscombe and was pretty underwhelmed. Looks quite different in today's version but still can't reconcile the thinking which positions the radar on a SEARCH helo such that it can't see anything ahead!!:confused: Yes, I know - it was intended for 'dipping' but even so ....:ugh:Plus ca change:hmm:

it is indeed my front lawn. One of the three helipads at Nobles hospital. QUite what disaster is envisaged that would require the arrival of three Chinooks I do not quite know.

We had one of our regular RAF seminars for post-crash preparedness, though this one was focussed quite heavily on environmental impact. Always interesting though.

Have you flown that one Sycamore??????
