Seeing as the 430 and/or 530 are so old school, Garmin does this to us.....:ugh:

I think touchscreens in that environment are not a good idea unless they have drastically improved their screen quality to something similar to that of an iPhone. If you've seen how damaged a 430/530 screen can get in a flying school environment considering they are not even touch screens, Garmin need to make sure they've got a good quality screen. Avidynes in the Cirrus are another example of how damaged a non-touch screen can become.

As Oshkosh they had similar units but with touch screen controls on a unit similar to an iPhone in size that looked pretty cool.

How many can FTDK fit in the dash? Or Jabba in the retard vehicle?:}

I was actually having a conversation about when touch screen GPS would come out to GA. Good to see it is happening, looks very intuitive and quick to use. :ok:

Looks like a pain in the arse if it's turbulent. Like trying to type a message on an iPhone whilst driving down a bumpy road.

It's got handles to hang onto !!!:ok:

Unsure how much hanging on you can do with it but anyway they thought of that too.

I'm just jealouse now as mine is away having a shiny new 430 & 530 installed :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Ooooooooooooooooooooh :)

Would like to see it in the field for a bit before I get one.

Hmmmmm now it might be expensive, but it would really pi$$ off forkie with GPS envy...:} And his beloved FTDK is still grounded :{

Onto serious things the drag and drop for ammending flight plans on the go would be really nice when ATC give you track changes etc.

J...where is the envy icon :O

Well this was an interesting find. I took this photo at OshKosh 2010 because I thought it looked like a good thing. Just realised it is Garmin kit after all. I wonder if these are touch-screen or not - the "remotes" certainly are.

With the current and pending iPad flight apps at a tenth the cost (albeit not integrated in with other avionics for a start) a true battle for the cockpit is being set up.

Here you go, the review of these beasts specifically talks about turbulence.

Yeah I've just been eyeing those off.

They're going to sell like hotcakes when they're released to market. Especially as the 530 replacement will also remotely control an audio panel and transponder too, so it's probable the big screen will fit in a whole lot more panels previously restricted to the 430, now that you can shove those boxes out of the way.

What irritates me somewhat is that tech is progressing so fast, and things like touchscreens are improving in quality so rapidly, that as soon as you spend $xxxxx on avionics, something heaps better comes along!

I am yet to be convinced that a touch screen is desirable in aviation avionics.

My Tom Tom has it, as does the audio/nav system in the SSV - I don't like it!

Picked up a good t.s.o.'d ADF that is still going strong, a couple of years ago, fom a fellow who was fitting a 430. Perhaps someone who wants the latest, will sell a barely run-in one soon for a reasonable price. Have just the place for it in the old Cessna.

Touchscreen avionics are apparently suitable for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (http://fightercountry.org/f-35/f-35-lightning-ii-fifth-generation-fighter-cockpit-picture/71610), and the F-18 Super Hornet.

But they're not up to scratch for General Aviation? :confused:

Perhaps GA knows something that Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, British Aerospace, Boeing, and the USAF don't? ;)

Oh dear, silly me!

A C172 bouncing along below the Cu versus the F-35! Yes, the similarlity is obvious when its pointed out to one!

A C172 bouncing along below the Cu versus the F-35! Yes, the similarlity is obvious when its pointed out to one!Yeah, because an F-35 or F-18 is never subjected to bumps, or violent or sudden manouvres, is it? :E

I suspect that they have tested the pilot interface and useability of said touchscreens under some fairly extreme conditions. :)
