The cheapest way depending on time of year will probably be something like Olympic via ATH to BKK or via VIE & BKK with Lauda or Austrian. You might be lucky and get a good deal off of Thai via BKK.

As for accomodation, if your backpacking it try the usual youth groups etc. But, If you looking for nice decent hotels try a brochure called Worldwide Choices from Unijet
4 star hotel from £35 a night!

If you e-mail me on [email protected] with more info I could let you know what to expect to pay

Well the cheapest from Europe to BKK still has to be good ole Aeroflot.
But Finnair has had direct flights to Phuket during winter season in the previous years.
Try www.finnair.com (http://www.finnair.com) .
They fly to BKK as well. I hear that prices are really competitive.
Also SAS flies to BKK from Copenhagen.
