I don't want to stir up any ****e, but I'm looking for more information on the '89 Strike. I've got a basic understanding of what happened but I'd like to learn the in's and out's of the whole situation.

Can anybody suggest a good book or online reference for me? Thanks.

Sky Pirates can't remember who by but a (abc?) journo of the time.

Seems like a decent account, fairly damning of all personalities involved but sympathetic to the pilot group as a whole. It's the only one I have seen, would be interested to read more.

If you have trouble finding a copy, I know they have one here (http://opac.library.usyd.edu.au/record=b1664335~S4
) if you are in Sydney, you won't be able to borrow it, but there are photocopiers available.

The first thing you need to know is THERE WAS NO STRIKE.A point I notice, not even known by the Qantas pilots spokesman.

Not many publishers put these in their titles ;)

Shouldn't this go into the Aviation History & Nostalgia forum?

The Australian Pilots Dispute of 1989 by Alex Paterson (http://www.vision.net.au/~apaterson/aviation/pd89_document.htm)
Seems to be a favourite.

There was a very good 2 part ABC radio (thats like TV without pictures for Gen Y people) doco on the thing in their Hindsight series. Don't know if it was ever sold as a tape/CD or even if now still available on-line although there is a link to the program (see below).

One of its strengths was that it looked at events before '89 and how they impacted on the dispute. It also looked closely at the human cost.

Part 1 (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/history/hindsight/stories/s316846.htm)

The title is very apt; "An Unhealed Wound".

Thanks very much for the references. Can we now let this thread die a natural death before we have a mud slinging match.

Nobody won in 89. Everyone lost a lot.
And it is a very sad fact that many of the people involved are not mature enough to discuss this subject sensibly. I hope they can now.

...are not mature enough to discuss this subject sensibly

No - I for one am sick and bloody tired talking about it
again after 22 years, and having to simultaneously give
lessons in Oz politics and the Bodgie's "accord", the Fat
Man's psychological warfare tactics against pilots (courtesy
of Lorenzo), public manipulation, how the IRC was blatantly
stacked (Oldmeadow et al), the August lockout, TAA's Jimmy
Bow Tie's orders from the top at Lorne, etc.

It was a bad time, especially when one finally discovered
the filth-ridden stench and maggotry that lies under the
skin of Canberra and its loathsome big business partners,
as well as the political machinations of the ABC and Oz
media in general (specifically Newscorp).

The Fed wasn't perfect either, and that arrogant bastard
LC has a lot to answer for (October 89 for one).

Journo Norrington's book was simply to make him money
period (and I'm not gonna give lessons in Norrington's
background). Patterson's summary is as good as any.

That's all I'm prepared to say here. Any questions can be
directed to someone else.

Patterson's summary is as good as any.

A word of warning about the Paterson "summary":

It is hopelessly biased and should be read as representing the view from only the pilot's side.

I reckon you covered it nicely slasher.

Now what is it they say at the RSL every evening?
I won't forget but I can laugh and say I learned something from it all.

Thanks for proving my point FGD105. Saves me (and possibly
others) any further wastage of breath.

You're right sixties. It was back then that I finally realised why
Nam vets only talk about it between themselves and not with
those who weren't in it.

Anyway nuff said. :oh:

The good part about 89 was that a lot of people in public life were seen in their true colours.
