Ok having been there for a short while, I will ask here.
What telephone numbers do I call from my mobile for:

1.Police, (when someone has broken in to my home)

2. Ambulance, (when I slip from the leaky shower and twist my ankle)

3. Fire, (If bump my gas knob on the stove and it goes Boom)

and since Jeddah has no real street address, how and where do I say I am?
other than SV city house number.
If/ When I get into a wreck on the streets who would I call? and will they speak English?
Which Internet provider is working best?
Who do I call to get the Sat Tv working.

Thanks for the Info.

Did you get or open the SV City Phone Book? #88 will get you security who will aid you in all these matters. Have you considered going to visit their office to introduce yourself?

Dont worry about a crash, a local will assist you and you will probably find that his friend/brother/cousin studied in your country :):) Or dial 9200-0056 if no one hurt as these are the paperwork people, Or dial any of your Arabic speaking colleagues, they will come help.

Internet depends on where you live, but as the cabling for this "new" compound internet service should be almost complete, don't spend too much on GO/STC/Mobily internet.

TV...... ummmmm, good question, no great answer... You can buy Orbit/Showtime or Pehla or similiar. The boot leg TV services are battling with encryption, so if you get a boot leg set up, it might be good for a year or a day, and there is no guarantee that you can renew it. Try Pirate Bay to aid your sanity!

Finally, if you are in SFS rather than the line, your colleagues made a handout answering all of these questions, if you are in main line, ask some of the SFS guys for a copy.

I went to Damouk asked for a phone book . was told they have none and they are old any ways. ( 2006)
I asked for a mailing address to the compound for personal things. he said Why use mail?
called security to report a theft. they seemed Irritated and failed to do any thing other than fill out a form.

so I will by pass them, go to police. ( accountability)
as for ambulance??? still not clear.

fire ? I guess let her Burn.

It just is what it is.
Maybe we need a SV Pilots board so all can join in and share the secrets. then again they wouldn't be secrets after that.

oh yea I need to get a Saudi driver License, any clues as to how and where ect?
Thanks for any help

Go to the Traffic Dept. and make an appointment with Ahmed, a likeable Saudi who walks very fast. It's always on a tuesday at 'Dalla' somewhere downtown (don't bother trying to find it yourself - you won't - and get a Saudi Car), be there early (7ish would be appropriate). Either pay the fees online before or bring cash, make sure you have pictures and a legible English translation of your driver's license or they will reject you for sure (= happened to an American). Be patient!

The driving test itself is fun and explains a lot what you will see in terms of driving in and around JED...

Ambulance # certainly doesn't work...

A 3 year old kid in the play-school was unconscious having a seizure last week, no one could get through to the city switchboard or the 997#. Landline and mobiles were useless.

One teacher was able to contact an ER Doctor directly on his mobile. The Dr. dispatched an ambulance.

The kids Dad got to the school first and took him to the medical in his own car.

You are basically on your own in an emergency.

That said, once the child got to Saudia Medical, the ER staff preformed very well. Child is fine now.

SAD, that it is this way, Very happys for the child and mother and father.

are ther any other options for ambulance? like private one or direct line tto a hospital? I here that it helps to pre register at the hospital you want to go to.
True or not?

Wait...wait....GUYS....

For your information, it is the year 2011, in the Christian Calendar...BUT....

It is 1432 in the Islamic Calendar....which means.......

1. Airplanes haven't been invented yet...thus, no SV

2. Phones haven't been invented yet, thus you can't get a telephone number

So, don't worry, you've got lots of time. Thats why I left and got back into the real world!:p
