Somehow, that photo still says western US to me, with the vehicle that looks somewhat like a covered wagon on the right side and the dryish looking hills.

Then again, the buildings are made of brick, as far as I can tell, especially by the reverse S squiggle of the fastener in the upper left, which is commonly used to hold brick walls from tumbling if the neighboring building is torn down.

Rather old fashioned, albeit common construction technique. Brick walls don't do well in response to lateral forces from earthquakes, so aren't common on the west coast of US. (Wooden houses do much better when they need to sway. Oak versus willow, in the old fable.)

I'll change my guess to someplace in Pennsylvania. Since Gettysburg is a major tourist spot, is that it?

Hartington

Sorry fpr the delay, but one needs to sleep once in a while. It;s now 3:30 am here.

The dry hill and very blue sky really DO indicate the western USA. Mr V. 3miles is on the correct path. It is not Carson City. Towns which were rich could afford good brick and stone buildings.

#1797 : It's in Colorado, it's either Colorado Springs or Fort Collins - I've been to both and it looks eerily familiar. It's whichever of those two towns is closest to the Colorado National Monument or Park, as I remember driving out there, and what beautiful scenery it was too. Lovely people in that part of the US.

Edit : Somewhere I have photos I took when I was there, if I can find them and they are relevant I'll put them up.

Well, if it was a town on one of the Silk Roads, (and there were at least two Silk Roads) then patient googling might find it.

I'm not that patient. it doesn't look like Kashgar, so I might give up. Not Hamadan either. Gaochang?

As to Sardinia, and the idea that a lot of folk from Aviation will have been there, I'm puzzled. Was it a stopover in the 30s?? maybe an Afghan/Iraq reference for the vets amongst us?

Significance of Sardinia is that the Agha Khan has established his main home on the north-east of the island. He owns a very significant portion of the island! The Agha Khan Foundation for Culture is currently excavating and restoring the Herat Citadel.

The colossal head sculptures of the Olmec (http://www.micahwright.com/olmec.htm) civilization. This civilization predates the Mayan and Aztec in modern day Mexico. During the reign of this group, artisans produced large scale heads, which many people now believe to be portraits of rulers of the Olmec (http://www.crystalinks.com/olmec.html).

Sirikit Certainly Olmec, although the ears in your photo don't quite match. Close enough, as I don't know where the photo was taken. (I inherited it from someone who visited Mexico and elsewhere. Hmmm... Perhaps this is the forum to identify other photos.)

You have to love a web page with a link labeled:
Olmec Heads (http://micahwright.com/olmec/olmecs2.html)

Go To The Colossal Heads
Olmec Heads (http://micahwright.com/olmec/colossal.html)

with the disclaimer, "Remember, Olmec Heads are NOT a toy, small children should NOT be allowed to roll around their Olmec Heads without adult supervision."

Better than:
Go To The Colossal Egos

P.S., Upon more careful scrutiny of your link, it's probably the correct head and correct location.

P.P.S., It's Ms or Mrs. vis3, not Mr., although vis3 or miles works fine. :)

I'm missing your joke, thought, or point. I apologize. No offense intended.

The concept of massive pigeons gives me pause. As a young child, but old enough to remember, one planted something white and sticky directly on my head. Some people call them flying rats.

The concept of pigeons on the scale of the Olmec heads reminds me of the mythical Roc, and the unpleasant notion of getting droppings from that.

The location where I took my piccie from is just below where the unpronouncable volcano beginning with E is,the one that disrupted aviation last year in Europe. Fascinating place, the locals there expect their community to be wiped out by the volcano and have grab bags and boots ready by their front doors at all times and have a Church to run and congregate in when the alarm is given.;)
