It is not Alaska. If the challenge is open in 12 hours or so, I'll post another photo, taken very near this one, which will almost certainly surprise and give it away as well. lomapaseo 27th Jan 2012, 03:47 In fairness, this photo was taken in 1968. I have no idea whether the tracks remain to this day. In fact, I tried a few google attempts to see, but the more they have improved google, the more useless it seems to have become. I'm an expert on RR tracks Right-of-Way marks, both Old & new, so after the answer is revealed I'll give it a shot visibility3miles 27th Jan 2012, 04:35 Thanks for saying 1968, as the switch box looks old. Yes, street marks mean people drive on the right. (Unless you flipped the photo.) Single track is odd for something in active use, so I'm betting not US. The markings between the tracks do not look familiar. Alaska is a good guess. i hope that is a minor bit of debris on the rail in the middle of the road crossing, not a crack. Very nice photo. I presume the photographer got out of the way before the next train passed by. finfly1 27th Jan 2012, 06:59 To keep things moving, here is the hint of which I wrote earlier..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v397/bucktaf/VERYupperHudsonRiver.jpg Surprising, no? im from uranus 27th Jan 2012, 07:45 New York State, USA? Can't pin point the actual place but will guess at somewhere near Albany? finfly1 27th Jan 2012, 14:13 Yes. The first one was taken in the large Adirondack Park in upstate NY. Again, from memory, I believe that it was taken within an hour or so drive of the photo of the headwaters of the Hudson. If Lom is able to pinpoint the rr tracks location, it would pin it down still further. I think this is the day we visited Tupper Lake, so it is possible the first photo was fairly close to that. Open House. TingTing 27th Jan 2012, 14:57 http://static3.travelandleisure.com/images/media/0000/3819/201103-b-guess-36.jpg lomapaseo 27th Jan 2012, 17:06 Fin Yes. Adirondack Pk is a very big area and of course it's impossible to locate both a river-stream, a parallel auto road and a RR crossing in the same area within a mile of each other. But considering your vague location and year it was taken, I would put it at the intersection with Mt Arab Road and the still extant RR line going into Tupper Lake Village. These scenic RR lines are being reactivated today out of Rochester and especiually Saratoga Springs NY. In fact the passenger dome cars and equipment down here in Florida just moved up to Saratoga to expand that line deeper into the Adirondack Park. finfly1 27th Jan 2012, 20:14 Thankee kindly there, Lom. I keep thinking of you (erroneously) as a New Yorker. Many non-New Yorkers (again not you particularly) have a very inaccurate concept of the size and beauty of upstate NY, where people can still get lost in the woods for days, together with wild bears. [not that the bears are lost, necessarily]. And that is wonderful news about the resurgence of rail travel (if it is ok to say so on an aviation platform). seacue 27th Jan 2012, 20:58 Not quite aviation related.... Loma... might point out that the Florida East Coast Railway is still (mostly??) single track ... running from Jacksonville to Miami. Mr Flagler built the FEC starting in the late 19th century and also was the prime developer of the resorts along the east coast of Florida. The FEC Railway reached Key West in 1912, a very major privately-funded venture. The railway to Key West was severely damaged by a hurricane in 1935. The state of Florida then bought the remains and the highway to Key West used many of the bridges built by the railway. im from uranus 27th Jan 2012, 21:04 Ting Ting, is that The Cloisters in Christ Church College, Oxford? Duckbutt 30th Jan 2012, 13:38 Thanks. I'll freely admit this one is a bit obscure but let's give it a go and see if anyone can track it down with a bit of detective work. Throughout its life it has always been a small, unremarkable hotel in a city suburb. What makes it stand apart is the fact that a gentleman who I am pretty confident you will have all heard of and who's picture is easily recognisible used to wash dishes in the kitchens here for a while in the first quarter of the 20th Century. The aircraft was forced to land in an Indiana cornfield after being canceled mid-flight. According to a statement from Velcro, the midair cancellation was made as part of the company's plan to cut continental service by 25 percent and emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy with an economically viable business strategy. "Velcro Airlines regrets any inconvenience to our valued customers," the statement read in part. "Unfortunately, in today's uncertain economy, service interruptions and cancellations are inevitable." Air-traffic-control personnel reported that Flight 1060 was at cruising altitude when Velcro cancelled the flight. According to the aircraft's black-box flight recorder, the crew announced the cancellation over the intercom, instructed passengers to gather their luggage from overhead bins for disembarking, then shut down all aircraft systems. At 9:46 a.m. Central time, Flight 1060's tracking designation vanished from air-traffic-control radar screens. Approximately 15 minutes later, the aircraft landed in a cornfield outside Tipton, IN. The passengers were forced to trudge across the cornfield to the nearest road and hitchhike back to Cincinnati. con-pilot 7th Feb 2012, 22:38 Close enough, except it landed on top of a levee on the Mississippi River, not a grass runway. Hell, it could almost be Santa Barbara as well. Gotta break down and check out Google Earth. 11Fan 8th Feb 2012, 20:33 I stumbled across the actual picture while validating my guess so I am self-disqualifying and withdrawing. Of course you would. ;);) It is La Jolla - jewel of SoCal and close to paradise on earth - but the green area is a public park not a golf course, and nowhere near a golf course. In fact, given the size of the city, San Diego has relatively few golf courses. (Hundreds of tennis courts.) 11Fan Thanks for the invitation, but I'm not a golfer - yet. I'd intended to learn when I grew up but it doesn't look like that's going to happen (growing up) so it's now part of my retirement plan. :) FL svhar 8th Feb 2012, 23:01 So I'll leave this here for the night: http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i457/svhar/DSC06793.jpg 11Fan 8th Feb 2012, 23:53 FL, If you ever take it up, just remember that a ball in the pocket is worth two in the brush. The Golf Course I was hinting at is Torrey Pines and it is at the Upper Left edge of this picture. BTW, My San Diego office is just a couple of miles or so from that spot. Yours was taken (I believe) just to the left of my note from the shore of that bay. That is Miramar Marine Corps Air Station is just to the right (South) of my office. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm107/APC11Fan/SanDiegoOffice.jpg Cheers, Flying Lawyer 9th Feb 2012, 07:00 11Fan Yes, I took the picture near the corner of Coast Blvd and Girard Avenue - the green area is Ellen Scripps Browning Park. Torrey Pines is in the distance, about 5-6 miles up the coast. It's also just about visible in this picture I took near the Easter Cross on Mt Soledad: Link (http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/65802055.jpg) (Too big to post) Mt Soledad also gives a good view of Miramar Air Station. The view was even better (for aviation enthusiasts) when Miramar was the USN Fighter Weapons School, then home of the Topgun school of movie fame, and known as 'Fightertown USA'. FL lomapaseo 9th Feb 2012, 14:50 Svhar So I'll leave this here for the night. With well manicured water boundaries it's gotta be new Europe svhar 9th Feb 2012, 14:59 You are right about that.
