jet_noseover 1st Dec 2011, 16:46 Potomac River and Arlington Memorial Bridge, Washington DC.
seacue 1st Dec 2011, 18:30 J. Noseover is correct.
That is Arlington House on the hill, now within Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington Memorial Bridge leads from the circle around the Lincoln Memorial on the way to the Cemetery.
Gen Robert E. Lee lived in Arlington House before the War Between the States. The estate came to him through his wife, who was great great ... granddaughter of Martha Custis Washington, a widow who married George Washington and brought two kids with her. One kid was George Washington Parke Custis, from whom Lee's wife descended. She was also descended from one Lord Baltimore of Maryland fame.
The leading families were well intertwined back then.

visibility3miles 1st Dec 2011, 21:23 Hate to bring an aviation aspect into it in this context, but isn't that the bridge Air Florida Flight 90 whacked into on January 13, 1982, because they hadn't de-iced close enough to take-off?

Ouch, ouch, and triple ouch.
I was no where near DC that day, but when I visited much later and saw the bridge, I thought, "Oh. That's the one I remember seeing on TV." and "It's a very, very low bridge, not far off the water at all, so a low hurdle to cross."
Enough on that subject.

Yes, it is a view across Campfield Marsh Nature Reserve and the Solway Firth to the remains of the Chapelcross nuclear power station, now being decommissioned. The four cooling towers had already been demolished when I took the pic in 2010.

acbus1 3rd Dec 2011, 07:19 While we're waiting anxiously:
The Western Hemisphere[1] or western hemisphere[2] is mainly used as a geographical term for the half of the Earth that lies west of the Prime Meridian (which crosses Greenwich, London, United Kingdom) and east of the Antimeridian (the International Date Line), the other half being called the Eastern Hemisphere.[3]
In this sense, the western hemisphere consists of the western portions of Europe and Africa, the Americas, the easternmost tip of Russia, numerous territories in Oceania, and a portion of Antarctica, while excluding some of the Aleutian Islands to the southwest of the Alaskan mainland.
The term is, however, often also used in political rhetoric to mean only the Americas (or the New World) and adjacent waters, while excluding all other territories in the geographical western hemisphere; thus, it is sometimes also referred to as the American hemisphere.[4][dead link]
Does 'political rhetoric' apply herein? :suspect:
They'll pinch anything if you let em!

Capetonian 3rd Dec 2011, 09:08 I tend to think of it in terms of IATA geography. The Western Hemisphere is IATA traffic conference area 1 - the Americas.
The other definition is confusing, as it means that part of some countries, (GB, ES, FR .... etc) would be in the Western Hemisphere and the rest in the Eastern.
Capetonian 3rd Dec 2011, 09:36 This is all I have to offer now. I think it's fairly easy.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee406/Helios340/WITW03DEC11.png
That beautiful picture of the canal is probably on the one that goes through Wiltshire I think it's the Kennet and Avon near Devizes where there is that series of locks (Calne Hill?). Although, I went walking along the canal near Marple in Cheshire a couple of weeks ago and it looked very similar ..... could be anywhere!
ThreadBaron 3rd Dec 2011, 09:40 First try, as not sure it is the perfect match: Gungrog Bridge, Montgomery Canal?
im from uranus 3rd Dec 2011, 10:17 Not the Kennet and Avon or the Montgomery Canal. Thought the bridge plaque may give it away.... I took this from our hire boat in October, a little treat for my Dad from my Brother and I, following the recent loss of our Mum. If you have ever thought of a canal holiday in the UK, do it. It is fantastic!
And I now have to sleep! Flamin' nights! Grr!

WIDN62 3rd Dec 2011, 13:17 A point of order! Caen Hill locks in Devizes - as in Northern France - and not Calne as in Northern Wiltshire. But not the right canal anyway, apparently!

visibility3miles 6th Dec 2011, 15:42 Yes, minuteman statue in Lexington. Now I will replace it with a smaller photo.
The minutemen (get ready to fight in a minute) were certainly at Concord, but the statue is in Lexington.
Minutemen were members of teams of select men from the American colonial partisan militia during the American Revolutionary War. They provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that allowed the colonies to respond immediately to war threats, hence the name.

The canal towpath is a park 184.5 miles long and reaches from Washington, DC, to Cumberland, Md.
Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 4, 1828 by President John Quincy Adams.
Construction of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad commenced the same day, July 4, 1828, when Charles Carroll of Carrollton did the groundbreaking, and the first section, from Baltimore west to Ellicott's Mills (now known as Ellicott City), opened on May 24, 1830. Can you read what it says on the manhole cover or the shop signs? The former were be a good clue as to the country (or maybe even the city), and the latter would tell you the language.
Since it looks strictly like foot traffic, the paving stones are probably still there unless they paved it over.
The street lamps on poles look British or Parisian, and I doubt those overhead lights strung over the street are still there.
finfly1 8th Dec 2011, 02:59 You are spot on re the time period. Frankly, I don't know whether they visited Prague, but they may well have done. Thanks.

visibility3miles 11th Dec 2011, 03:11 That looks like a containment dome for a nuclear power plant.
visibility3miles 11th Dec 2011, 04:50 or a huge planetarium, but it looks too solidly built for that, plus it doesn't look like a place that would attract tourists.
The dome doesn't have quite the right structure to house a large scale high-G centrifuge.
With that many buildings, I doubt it's a run of the mill power plant.
I don't now what that quarter circle building(s) structure is halfway between the wing and the dome/stack.
The large box shaped building left of the (smoke)stack with the one huge door(?) looks like really big things could be assembled inside, then wheeled out, but the parking lot and narrow road leading to it makes that unlikely.
The picture looks kind of old, as does the (mixed) architecture of the place, as if it was built piecemeal as the place expanded.
Maybe a national lab, but I have no idea which. Maybe, just maybe, some some company along the lines of Lockheed or Pratt & Whitney.
I'll bet there's a fence around the whole place.

Currently it is barely used at all (I think one small plane drops skydivers from time to time). It has a railroad siding attached and would be a fine freight reliever for JFK et al, as most of the approaches are over water or cemeteries.
Not surprisingly, local politicians want to turn it into a ski slope. (It is perfectly flat, but hey, they ARE politicians).

Capetonian 12th Dec 2011, 18:26 Maybe there's a subtle message there, such as 'get stuffed'.
(Taxidermist : "Do you want your cats mounted, Mrs. Smith?"
Mrs. Smith : "No thanks, just standing next to each other will be fine.")
acbus1 12th Dec 2011, 19:01 Could've been worse: 'Do you want me to stuff your pussy, Mrs Smith?'

Sirikit's back over the kitchen sink again !
visibility3miles 13th Dec 2011, 13:06 Capetonian nailed it.
Have you been there?
Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 13:22 In order to get this going a bit faster, here's an easy one, or two.
Both pictures were taken in the same country.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee406/Helios340/WITW13DEC11.jpg
svhar 13th Dec 2011, 13:58 This is in Windhoek, Namibia.
And the one on the left is the railway station in Swakopmund.
Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 14:05 One is. Well done. It wasn't in Namibia though when I took it, it was in Windhoek, South West Africa.
And the other?
svhar 13th Dec 2011, 14:08 Yes, I put the one on the left in a bit later, as edit.
Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 14:55 Well done, Hvar, I hadn't seen that. I don't know how you do it but you are remarkable.
It was the railway station, it is now a hotel, when I took that photo in 2008. The country was then Namibia. The Lutheran Church in Windhoek is a photo from 1978, when it was South West Africa.
Tu tienes el mando!
svhar 13th Dec 2011, 15:05 Gracias, Capetonian.
This one might not be very easy, but there are some clues in the picture.

Canardly 13th Dec 2011, 16:07 US Special Interest Section of Havana, Cuba (almost an Embassy of the USA).

svhar 13th Dec 2011, 17:04 Thank you, Canardly. Here comes one more.

Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 17:11 Copenhagen. I think it's the Royal Palace (Amalienborg? ) from memory, need to check.
svhar 13th Dec 2011, 17:17 Correct, Capetonian. The winter residence of the Danish royal family. I thought the Dutch flag on the boat could distract a bit.
Over to you again then.
Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 18:04 I looked at the Dutch flag, at least I thought that was what it was, and decided it wasn't relevant. I just felt it was Copenhagen when I first looked at it.
Thank you, for another good challenge. As I'm making dinner for the hungry hordes, I'll declare OH.
SINGAPURCANAC 13th Dec 2011, 19:18 Simple question, the name of country...
http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab53/SINGAPURCANAC/Beograd/IMGP1093-1.jpg
:E
Hartington 13th Dec 2011, 19:27 They drive on the left in Japan!
Capetonian 13th Dec 2011, 19:36 Croatia or Slovenia.
Rule3 13th Dec 2011, 19:43 Someone tell SINGA I think it is Bulgaria. If so OH.
Sirikit 13th Dec 2011, 21:06 I've been to Linderhof and there was this enormous bed. Lovely view out of the windows.;)
There is a pothole in that road Singa so it won't be Switzerland.:p
11Fan 13th Dec 2011, 21:28 ....and the ceiling tiles?
:E
svhar 13th Dec 2011, 21:34 I would guess Austria.
In Bulgaria there is no region, that I know of, that begins with KL or XL, like the plate on the green Toyota on the left.
And I think the Toyota is from Klagenfurt-Land, it might be a visitor though, in some other place.
scran 13th Dec 2011, 21:36 Is that a German flag, right hand side, half way up the pic?
Rule3 13th Dec 2011, 22:04 It appears to be a German Flag... ared herring.
Serbia uses the 2 letter crest 3 number 2 letter plate, and SINGA
2+2 = SERBIA. OH if correct. Someone please tell him as I am the only person on the planet on his ignore list.;)
SINGAPURCANAC 13th Dec 2011, 22:32 Serbia, no!German flag....:=:=
It is not Austria,
Europe .It means neither Bulgaria nor Japan, :E
Slovenia or Croatia, too optimistic, those countries aren't so developed :}
hint: Before declaring OH, please find correct answers, :}
So, the name of country is....
;)
Sikirit, sorry, you are right, it is not Switzerland, but it is not answer to question....:ok:
svhar 14th Dec 2011, 06:44 Then it has to be in Italy, near the Austrian border. The green Toyota is a visitor from Austria. Ice cream sign. Hotel sign. The Pajero in front must have a local plate. Buildings look like in the Alps. Since it is not Austria, Germany, Slovenia or Switzerland it does not leave many countries. Liechtenstein is a slight possibility.
Serbia, no!German flag....
It is not Austria,
Europe .
I don't get this. Is there another Austria?
SINGAPURCANAC 14th Dec 2011, 06:53 Then it has to be in Italy, near the Austrian border
Just excellent.
arriving from Slovenia,Planica and Ratece, it is the first bigger town in Italy,Tarviso. What impressed us, how it looked German.... Cam was ready when we spot this scene, German flag, Austrian and German car plates, even wife saw German chain of cosmetic shops....
Your Copenhagen picture with Dutch flag, inspired me....
over to you,
:ok:
Capetonian 14th Dec 2011, 06:53 I used to work with someone from Bavaria who insisted that 'Bayern ist nicht Deutschland' and was a separate country. I think we can discount that here, so not many possibilities left. The German flag in the photo (like the Dutch one in the photo of Copenhagen a few postings above) might be irrelevant.
Several countries have that same style of number plate, it started with Austria but has spread through the area.
There are places in Romania that look like this but there are too many non-Romanian number plates for it to be Romania.
Certainly an interesting challenge.
svhar 14th Dec 2011, 07:06 Yes, it was interesting indeed. Open House.
SINGAPURCANAC 14th Dec 2011, 08:13 Easy one,
http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab53/SINGAPURCANAC/Jun%202011/IMGP1085.jpg
Hint: rotate your screen to left by 90 degrees, ;)
and one question, where is sabredog?
svhar 14th Dec 2011, 08:29 Planica, the highest ski jump slope in Europe, Slovenia.
SINGAPURCANAC 14th Dec 2011, 08:43 I told you, easy, once when you rotate your screen, ;)
your turn maestro...
svhar 14th Dec 2011, 08:59 It was, especially since you wrote Planica, Ratece and Tarviso. I assumed it was taken on the same trip.
I have to declare Open House again as the Photobucket Login page does not seem to work at the moment.
lomapaseo 14th Dec 2011, 11:32 I told you, easy, once when you rotate your screen, http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/wink2.gif

visibility3miles 14th Dec 2011, 17:49 Ski jumping a guy thing. A crazy young teenage guy thing. It's really neat watching them slightly move their hands and move their skis for maximum distance, but the learning curve must be pretty steep.
SINGAPURCANAC 14th Dec 2011, 18:31 if you nave never been at any ski jump area it is complicate to imagine how the slope is steep! ;)
I have visited so far only Planica and Igman ( olimpic facility near Sarajevo, with 2 ski jump slopes) .
At the top of longer run at Igman when you look at bottom, bus looks like box of matches. and I think that this slope is only 90 m.....
That on Planica is 180+. I have more pictures if you interested I may send it to you. :ok:
Needless to say that it was my Big dream to visit Planica. So when opportunity arose I just informed my wife. No discussion. I paid it as well. Two hours of shopping at Palmanova.
Some things you can't buy, for all rest.....;)
visibility3miles 14th Dec 2011, 19:18 I'll stick to skydiving, thanks, and I only did that a few times.
Free fall is great. I'm fine with heights. It's the abruptly stopping part that scares me.
Wasn't there one Olympics when they moved the ski jump take off (starting) point farther down because people were landing in or near the flat area? Gravity is more forgiving when you land on a steep slope.
Sirikit 15th Dec 2011, 14:54 This is exciting. Good lads!:p
